I'm the exact opposite -- straight is no problem; bending is another story all together. I go for my second post-op appt next Wed. Can't wait! I hope he says I can drive and at least start riding the recumbent bike. My muscle tone is steadily disappearing. Oddly, I've lost weight, possibly because my metabolism hasn't caught up to my inactive state just yet. Or maybe it's the muscle loss (must stop worrying about that -- gah!). Glad you're hanging in there!

Well, to be fair, I'm not really very bendy, either. The straight thing is just so weird, because it doesn't hurt, per se, it just clearly DOESN'T WANT TO! My kingdom for the recumbent bike, yo. Fo real. Take care! Fingers crossed for a good appointment next week!

demand phenergan or compazine with your pain meds.
nausea is as bad as pain, and just like pain, there's no bloody reason to suffer it when there's a handy little pill that could make it go away!

i'm just going to demand brand new drugs! surely there's something out there that i can take that doesn't make me oogy. i mean, i KNOW there is. i've taken them before.

the pain, though, is pretty okay now. you'll see on friday. i'll be the one hobbling around with a smile on my face!

Hi again!

I have a travel coffee mug with a handle on it that I can loop around my crutches. Started with that when I was on them indefinitely right after my accident; coffee is very important, but so is staying upright and not killing yourself.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one obsessing about calories and weight while laid up. I've actually lost a little weight since the accident somehow - maybe calories burned by crutching around? - but I'm DYING to start rehab, if only to burn some calories and energy off. I suspect I'm going to come out of this with a much less sedentary lifestyle, if only because I now really appreciate the freedom to move.

(SCARY CLOWN. I totally did not have a scary clown. Or even any remaining marker. Just a lot of iodine marks that I still haven't gotten off)

((d'ya mind if I friend you? You seem interesting and smart and fun, and hey, you too are a temporary knee-related cripple...))

Hello, hello!

I was just reading through a bit of your journal, and noticed that you're already doing exercises. I'm SO JEALOUS of your exercises! Before my surgery, the sports medicine clinic sent a big pile of paper wherein they told me that it would be important for me to be very diligent about doing my exercises immediately following surgery. Except no one bothered to tell me what these exercises may be. So I've been worried that I'm healing all wrong, and that by the time I see my doctor tomorrow -- a mere seven days after my surgery -- that I will have already f'd everything up.

Did you get your exercises at your first post-op?

Also, I'd be honored to have a new friend around these parts!

I haven't HAD a post-op yet!

My surgeon and his clinical services manager are OBSESSIVE about exercises. I originally saw my surgeon as a second opinion thing, and he knew that; he still had the CSM come in and give me a whole packet of exercises to be doing, and cleared me to use this little therapy pedal machine I have at home (sort of the pedals only of an exercise bike). Then, when I went with him for the actual care and treatment, they stepped up my PT to strengthen all the muscles in my leg - the theory is that if you have superhuman musculature going in, you'll atrophy down to normal instead of weak.

I got my exercise chart at my pre-op appointment, with instructions to begin ankle pumps as soon as I regained consciousness, and quad sets, too, if I could manage it (theory: nerve block in in place, you won't feel a thing, start working it now). I added flexion/extension on the second day after the surgery, and I was SUPPOSED to add hamstring sets on Sunday or so, but I stiffened way up and feel like crap, so I've been ( ... )
