for Jack

Alcuin honestly had no idea what to think about the fact that Dr. House was suddenly their houseguest. Moreover, his medical condition made him even grumpier than usual, which was exceedingly obvious from the moment Phedre had come home with him.

Joscelin hadn't yet been home to see him, and Alcuin couldn't even imagine how he was going to react to this turn of events. He hadn't had much of a chance to speak with Phedre about what her plans were yet, but he couldn't imagine that she was planning on leaving him in her and Joscelin's bed. They did have a spare room, but no bed in it. Alcuin had the sinking feeling that perhaps he would be expected to abdicate his own... which though unpalatable in theory, perhaps might be the best solution. He has spent the better part of three years avoiding Dr. House, and sees no reason to stop doing so now. Especially an irritable, vomiting version of House.

The large black dog had come trotting up behind them when they arrived, and was still seated outside the door after House was settled. Alcuin overheard House asking Phedre to "do something about the damn dog" and then muttering in a more dejected tone, "See if Jack will take him."

So when Phedre emerged, Alcuin had immediately volunteered to see the dog to Jack. He didn't have much experience with animals, but the dog walked immediately with him once he'd called him by name (except for a brief detour to chase a small woodland creature up a tree), and it didn't take long for them to arrive at Jack's hut.

Jack was outside on his hammock. "Well met, Jack," Alcuin said, and watched as the dog bounded up to Jack enthusiastically.
