Thursday I watched the first three days of Torchwood: Children of Earth, and Friday night I watched the last two.

when a good, hard-working man has to go home and shoot his family and himself... There's no redemption for that.

Yeah, I think that bit was awful. Just milking the angst too hard. In reality if he felt he had no option he would have just run away, or something. Anythings better than killing your children. :/

I thought he was getting the gun so that he could fight off the soldiers that would come and get his children. I had no idea he was planning a murder/suicide.
