I've been wondering...

... what kind of music you fellow writers listen to when you write smut? It's the second night I'm writing very emotional, tense smut, and I keep distracting myself by looking for just right the music to suit the mood. My favourite songs are Everything (Is Never Quite Enough) by Wasis Diop (found on the OST of The Thomas Crown Affair, the Brosnan ( Read more... )

I'm really rather dull, in that I pretty consistently listen to "Muse" when I write, regardless of content. However, I do sometimes duck over to scores like "The Piano", or various offerings from the "lord of the Rings" trilogy; I like the lyrical yet driving nature of the music, which I find to be rather helpful when trying to figure out how tab A will wind up in slot B without someone poking an eye out.

It's always hard work to write smut.

I absolutely agree; I think it takes a bit more concentration than regular prose, because I'm so wrapped up in the minute details of it--of making sure that it *works*, that is, and that one of the characters doesn't have to be a Cirque du Soleil performer for things to work. As you say, it is *quite* useful, as well, for getting to know your characters, and the more hidden corners of their personalities and psyches.

I already use The Piano and LotR and other soundtracks for my "regular" writing. They generally work quite well, because there are no lyrics to distract you.

I guess I was just looking too hard, when the good stuff is right there on my hardrive already. BUt sometimes I get those cravings... just like food. Anyway.

I hear ya. I went through a pretty intense Baroque Brass phase recently.

I rarely listen to music when writing. I find I can't tune the music out enough to let me write or let it influence the prose. Heh, I'm too ADD I suppose.

Goodness yes. I do have to block it all out in my own mind and build from there...

I find that music helps me create the mood of the piece I'm working on. Atmosphere is very important to me, also when writing. I tend to switch to soft lights (like candles) and music, comfy clothes, something nice to drink... and then I can lose myself completely, and relax.

I wish I could do that. If I do, I cease being able to read the screen.

Mostly, I find that my atmosphere is in my head. When I really get going (from what I remember), I am *in* the piece, and it doesn't matter where I am or what's going on in the background.

I can do that, too, but sometimes... I need a bit of help. I can write in a classroom full of hormonal teenagers during supervision.
