Do I have to keep up the pace
To keep you satisfied
...
I've done things in small doses
So don't think that I'm pushing you away
When you're the one that I've kept closest
Go slow. Go slow.

Maura knew she was in trouble when she made her way towards her car, parked in the darkness under the trees, and she saw the familiar form of Jane Rizzolli leaning against it.
"Jane. Hi." Maura began, stopping short, leaving a safe distance between them. Her attention split, focused on the woman before her and then to the fact that she felt she needed to keep her distance - it seemed a necessity when it came to an unknown entity like Jane. "I thought you left already?"
"Drove here with Frost, waiting for him to get off the phone." Jane pushed herself off of Maura's car, "We were going to head over to the Robber tonight, if you wanted to come."
"Thanks," Maura began, "But I'm tired, think I'm going to go home."
"Ok, just wanted to ask." Jane walked out of the shadows of the trees and past the other woman. "I missed you today." She threw out over her shoulder, jamming her fists in her pockets. Maura hated when she did that, it stretched out her pockets and forced her shoulders up to her ears - awful posture.
"Me too - I just had so much to do. I told you last week about my old professor coming to town, right?" Maura asked, perplexed. She was sure she'd mentioned it. She was excited - it wasn't often she had people visit her, or willingly spend time with her.
"Yeah, I'm sure you did."
"Brunch tomorrow?" Maura asked, tossing her purse into the back of her car and facing Jane.
"Maybe."
"My treat?" Maura grinned - "Someplace fancy - with the best Bloody Mary's in the city?"
"Maybe. Look," Jane glanced over her shoulder and saw Frost off the phone. "I should go - I'll call you tomorrow if I'm not too tired." She backed away, her eyes guarded and hooded from lack of sleep and the leafy patterns of the trees overhead. With a final glance, Maura watched as Jane turned around and made her way towards her partner.
Perplexed, the Doctor stood against the door to her car and watched the two drive off before she got into her own and made her way home, her car sliding effortlessly through the late night streets. Something seemed wrong with Jane, she normally wasn't so distant after a late night, cranky or surly, yes, but not distant. Still, Maura supposed, even she was a little removed - their late night activities last night hadn't allowed much time for sleep, coupled with her early morning yoga, lunch and dinner with her visiting professor and his wife - then driving them to Logan airport. Perhaps Jane felt neglected, Maura thought as she made her way through her near-dark house, pouring herself a small glass of red, but she had made every attempt to be certain that Jane felt that her physical exertions were enjoyed, appreciated and reciprocated. She eyed her glass and pondered where she could find something stronger at this time of night.
