Author's Notes: Just a little ficlet while we wait for the rest of the WIPs. :D

He wasn't as oblivious as these people would think. He noticed things. With the life he lived, he had to be observant or he'd end up dead.

He noticed that Sheppard and Miss Weir were growing closer long before the old clucking hens started to comment on it. He noticed that it was more than just friendship that drew Sheppard to the Mercantile or Weir to eat dinner with him at Vala's nearly every evening when he was in town. Now, everyone watched their courting, but he knew it had begun long before most people would claim.

He noticed that Jack O'Neill only acted like an overgrown child. He saw the fierce protectiveness that the man held for his town and for the Indian nations under his purview. He saw the desires that often drove men who had seen great tragedies, the desires to never see it repeated. He saw the tenderness in his gaze whenever Miss Carter was nearby.

He noticed that Jackson was finally pulling his head out of the ground and seeing Vala for the beautiful woman she was. He saw long ago that for all of Vala's lighthearted teasing and flirting, the emotions in her eyes told a very different story. He didn't know how she'd come to love Jackson so much, but he was just glad the man was starting to realize it himself.

He noticed that Caldwell's luck was extremely lousy. He was a good lawman - not that he'd ever tell him that to his face - but he just had the fortune (misfortune?) of protecting people who had their own way of looking at things. From what he'd heard, Jacob Carter had worked well with the townspeople for years until he retired. Caldwell had replaced him as sheriff, but his more serious way of dealing with things inevitably led him to clash with many of Atlantis' citizens. If anything, people didn't get along with him very well because he wasn't Carter. Caldwell also had really bad luck in other areas of his life. He'd noticed the way his eyes focused on Miss Weir sometimes, a flicker of longing entering into them. The man had been too late. The woman's heart had been claimed, and by a gunfighter no less.

He definitely noticed a lot. More than most gave him credit for.

Many people - including Sheppard, sometimes - thought he was blind to one thing, though. They thought he didn't notice the looks she gave him.

He didn't pretend that there was no attraction. She'd caught his attention from the beginning, when she'd threatened to spank him like a misbehaving boy. How could someone so tiny and fragile-looking be so intimidating? She had every man in Atlantis cowed. Even Kavanaugh was terrified of her, though it never stopped him from making a complete jackass of himself. In the end, he'd been justly punished for his part in landing her in the jail for thirty days. Even his own door thought him in the wrong, or so it was good-naturedly spread by people.

She was spirited, there was no doubt about that. That was probably one of the things he liked the most about her.

What he didn't understand was why she seemed to like him in return. He saw her staring at him when she thought no one was looking. He was many things, but a fool wasn't one of them. He had a fair idea of what those looks meant.

It was a shame, really. If it had been under any other circumstances...

Well, best not to dwell on it. His life's course had been decided long ago, through a combination of events both within and outside his control. He was meant to hunt the Wraith down like the rabid dogs they were. Sheppard may have been determined to follow that course as well, but he wasn't bound to it. He'd found a new way, even if he hadn't completely set himself on it. He would, eventually.

The hunt was his life. It was no place for a woman, no matter how strong she was. No woman should have to see what he'd seen. That was why he was so anxious to move on from Atlantis. Best to go before she grew too attached to him.

At least, that was what he always told himself.
