Title: Time to Spare
Author: Melyanna
Pairing: Kate/Lorne
Summary: Things were better now.
Notes: Set about fifteen months after "Deals with Weddings". I have another fic in the works that comes between that one and this one (and explains how we get from Point A to Point B), but for now, I figured it was high time I got this off my hard drive. Oh, and this is babyfic. Just letting you know. ;)

Marcus didn't have as much time to draw as he used to. Truthfully, he didn't have as much time to spare as he used to at all, but time to draw was probably the only thing he regretted not having. It had been most of a year since he and Kate had gotten married. It was fair to say that he was used to married life now, though he knew his life wouldn't ever be the same as before. He didn't care about that, though. Things were better now.

During the summer, he'd called in favors from some friends in town and built on to his house. Kate had never complained about it, but the kitchen was too small for them both and she needed a room with better light if she wanted to work at home. He added on bedrooms, too, and all the work was finished not long before Kate entered her confinement.

It had been a joy to watch her throughout her pregnancy, even though he was terribly impatient to see their baby. Sitting in the next room and listening while Kate delivered the child had been a torment, but worth it in the end.

The new mother was recovered enough now to go out of the house at whiles, which explained why Marcus was alone with their little girl now. Kate was with Laura Beckett, who was herself expecting in the spring, and Kate was loaning her some of the clothing she'd worn during her pregnancy. Meanwhile, baby Emma was lying in her cradle not far from the fire. While she slept, Marcus sketched.

She had his nose - that much everyone agreed upon. Though her cheeks were still quite chubby, the shape of her face was more like Kate's. Her thin, blonde hair was currently covered by a bonnet, with a curl or two sticking out from under the lace. Her dress was frilly in a way only little girls could get away with, and in a way expected for the daughter of the town's seamstress. It made for more difficult drawing, though.

As the firelight danced on her pale skin, Emma slowly wakened, blinking and fixing her eyes on him. Marcus had been assured by any number of people that her eyes wouldn't stay that blue-grey color forever, and he found himself wishing that they'd end up like Kate's clear blue eyes.

He set aside his sketch and smiled down at his daughter. Emma cooed back at him, kicking her little feet. "You want up?" he asked. She made a happy sound at him as he reached down into the cradle and lifted her out. She could hold her head up now, meaning that the world had gotten far more interesting for her.

Marcus held her close and kissed her cheek. Emma yawned and smiled at him. "Hi, darling," he said to her. "Did you sleep well?"

She tried to stick her fist in her mouth as she looked up at him with those big eyes. He chuckled, as he usually did when she performed that particular maneuver. On occasion, she'd ended up with a mouthful of blanket or shirt or Kate's hair while doing that. But she was so beautiful and her gaze was so unflinching that Marcus couldn't help but stare back at her for a long time.

It had been about fifteen months since the first time he'd asked Kate to marry him and she'd said no. The fact that he was sitting in front of his fireplace with their child happily kicking against his leg was highly surreal.

Behind him, the front door opened. As Kate entered, Emma continued her happy babble. Marcus looked and saw his wife brushing loose hair from her face. "Welcome back," he said. "Is the weather turning bad?"

"I think so," she replied, coming up to him. She gave him a teasing smile. "If it gets much worse, we might be stuck for a few days."

Marcus just grinned back, and Kate leaned down to kiss him softly. "And how is Emma?" she asked.

"She slept most of the time you were gone," he told her. "She's been pretty happy since she woke up, but I think she'll be hungry soon."

Kate started to take off her coat, and she glanced down at the table where his drawing was sitting. "You've been busy," she remarked. With obvious fondness, she ran her finger around the outline of Emma's face. "This is a beautiful likeness."

Marcus murmured his thanks while Kate put her coat away. By then the baby was growing a little fussy, and her mother took her, taking her seat near the fire and settling the child to her breast. There was a soft look on Kate's face, and not for the first time Marcus wondered what was going through her mind. He suspected that it was an impenetrable mystery of womanhood, but he could see well enough the beauty of the relationship between mother and child.

Kate looked up then and got a bemused smile on her face. "What is it?" she asked.

He shrugged. "I just wonder sometimes if I'll be this contemplative with all our children," he replied.

A faint blush rose on her cheeks. Marcus was a little surprised that she was embarrassed by that, but it had been quite a while since he'd slept with her. That was something he was hoping to change soon, but he had promised himself a long time ago that he would never push Kate into anything. The fact that they were married now and had a child was not going to change that.

Of course, sometimes Kate surprised him.

Her embarrassment faded, replaced by a small smile. "Well," she said, "some things will have to change if we're to have more children."

At that he laughed, for he couldn't agree more.
