holy hell. That is insane.

Wonders now if the news reports saying external drives are going extinct and to use carbonite and the like don't have a valid point (and wonders also if the sheer freaking cost is killing them off in the first place)

this just sucks for you

The main thing that's a royal freakin' pain in the ass is the old filksongs which took forEVER to digitize. At least I kept the tapes.

I'm wondering now how many USB drives (which have better technology) it would take to do a similar backup -- I didn't have nearly all the 750 gigs filled.

I don't want to use my bonus (which should come in March), but it's a viable option, I suppose. *ponder*

this encrypted online backup's they're trying to drive us toward...i don't think I'd like the cost of them. Sigh. Speaking of this i should back up this computer

As miertam says here in the comments, several drives allows for a redundancy. I shall do this ASAP. At least MOST of my music is already "backed up" in the form of the originals.

Well, after I declined their service and explained why, they were very nice and have agreed to hold the drive until March (when my raise and bonus hit), and then set me up with a payment plan. SO....

(I like places with good customer service!)

It's about right. The cost is so high because they have to maintain a clean room and have the experts on hand who know how to resurrect a drive that has been through a fire.

What Miertam said, below above (he does this kind of thing for a living)...

But, as I say to someone else here (SimCities Eats My Brain), they are allowing me a payment plan AND will wait until March when I get a) my raise and b) my bonus. This means I may be able to get it done!

I have all my data backed up to at least 2 other places on my network. With the drives they are producing today any one of the three could go at any time. Anything that would cause all three to go out involves a disaster in which finding food and shelter will be about 99997 priorities above the desire to recover my filk collection.

I realize that NOW. Had I realized it before, I wouldn't have put all my faith in only one drive. I also would have burned more to CD, but I thought, heck, I don't need to do THAT, I have my EXTERNAL DRIVE!

Woe is me.
