He's always watching over her. Rem knows it, even when she isn't around, she is positive that he's watching, and she wasn't wrong. It meant trouble, no matter how you looked at it, but he kept doing it, and Rem felt sorry that she never discouraged him.
The woman in question was a human, a beautiful one. Blonde, young, attractive. Gorgeous. But small, and fragile, and broken; a shrinking violet who threatened to disappear from the world at any moment.
And that moment was today.
Being a shinigami meant knowing things other beings didn't know. And the upcoming death of Rita Ann Bennett (née Brandon) was one of those things.
Rem sat next to Gelus as he, like always observed the Human World. Rita was under her abusive ex-husband Paul, who was taking advantage of her, sexually, against her will. She tried to reach out to a baseball bat, the only weapon within her reach, but it was too far from her. He notices, beats her up again, then proceeds to grab said bat.
Rem closes her eyes with a sigh; she knows what's coming, and knows it must pain Gelus, because she's aware that what he feels for the human girl was love, Rem could recognize it in his eyes at this stage.
And she knows now is the time for Rita to die.
"Why?" Gelus asks, more to himself than to anyone else.
"It is the way the human world works" Rem replies. "We must not interfere with it."
But Gelus did not agree with that.
The shinigami took out his Death Note and Rem knew the stupid decision he had made just now. He wrote Paul Bennett in big, black letters, and before the man could deliver the final strike with his bat, he falls on top of her, lifeless, victim of a heart attack.
Rita moves him aside, still breathing. Still alive. And that last thought gives Gelus some relief before his existence ends right in front of Rem's eyes.
