Kate stood in confusion. It was not normally like Ginny to be like this, but she knew all too well that Vanya could drive a normally sane person to anger or sadness with little effort. It had taken all Katelyn's effort not to snap back at the bitchy Seer herself, so she thought little of Ginny's angry tirade. But in her mind Kate didn't know what was the bigger surprise, seeing the normally friendly Witch lashing out or the fact that Vanya had actually gotten someone a gift.

Hearing yet another comment about her being a mangy dog snapped her wandering mind to attention. "I am not a dog," she said in a low voice, finally unable to resist the urge to say something at long last. "You were wrong. Liz doesn't think that. Ralph doesn't. And I don't think, Ginny does either."

Speaking of her friend, Katelyn glanced back towards her and seemed to cheer up slightly. "Let's go," she said with a small smile. "The dinner, it might not be the nicest gift. But time away from her has to be the best gift anyone can give."

"Yeah," Katelyn said with a grin as Ginny rejoined her side. "Food now."

As the two girls walked away, Kate mused aloud. "I hope they have cake. Or at least cupcakes, at the dining hall. Even if I didn't bring any candles..."

"Am I invited as well?" came from behind them. Ralph ruffled Kate's hair by way of greeting, then skipped two, three steps to be ahead of the couple, take hold of Ginny's hand and placed a light kiss on it. All of it would've been perfectly normal for the woman if one were to overlook the slight nervousness caused by the forced display of her usual self.

"Twould be a true honour to have a chance to dine with such a pretty lady as you two, don't you know?" Ralph added with a small grin directed at the younger girls. "Especially with our birthday girl here..."

"Ralph!" A wide grin appeared as one of her other friends unexpectedly appeared, ruffling her hair and offering to join them for dinner. "It would be great fun, if you came too." She smiled a friendly smile, but otherwise remained quiet as Ralph began to flirt with the redhead. It was Ginny's special day and she should be the center of attention, Katelyn thought, so after that greeting she was content to follow the other two to the lunchroom.

"A hug, huh?" Ralph grinned. "May I, Kate?" Without even waiting for a response, she scooped up the redhead in her arms, much like men do in movies with the girl they love - except that Ralph was willing to do it with anyone at the moment.

"So, dinner hall?" she asked at the girl now resting in her arms. "Let's see if I can race you there. Coming, Kate?" And with those words, Ralph sprinted down the stairs, without falling, of course, and holding Ginny tightly so that she wouldn't be dropped all of a sudden.

"A race?" Kate glanced back at Ralph, but Ralph was already halfway to the stairs. "Oh," she said as the girl faded from view.

Ralph had the gift of Slayer speed, but she was on foot and carried a burden. Kate casually wandered toward the nearest window, and slipped outside onto a branch of a nearby tree. In no great hurry, she paused to close the portal behind her before turning and leaping from her perch. Taking wing, a falcon then soared across the campus, taking the most direct route through the New Hampshire skies to the place where the three were to meet.

((OOC: It's not cheating. She doesn't think so, at least.)) XD

"Huh," was Ralph's response. She then flashed an apologetic smile at Ginny. "I'm afraid I don't fly very well. No wings and I never got to understand Elphie's explanation about flying brooms. I'm meant to stay on the ground."

They still made a good time, even though Kate beat them by far. "Cheater," Ralph accused the wild girl fondly as she put Ginny down. "You know flying is always faster than running and that I can't fly." She then chuckled and ruffled Kate's hair again. "So what can I get the two of you? You'd really better sit down, Ginny, you're looking a bit pale and if you suddenly decide to faint 'cause you're hungry, you'd better do that while you sit. So tell me, what would you like to eat?"

"I thought about running," Katelyn confessed. "As a cat. But! With you on the stairs, I didn't think...maybe, I shouldn't be running between your legs and underfoot." She grinned as Ralph mussed her hair, even though she jokingly called her names.

"I can go fix something," Kate said in a polite decline of Ralph's offer. "It's not my birthday. You should treat Ginny special, if you want. But I can go and get my own?"

"Anything but grilled cheese, yes ma'am!" Ralph saluted and then firmly pushed Kate on a chair next to Ginny. "Someone's got to keep the girl company. Besides, isn't that Liz I see coming this way? She might think you're trying to run away from her if you come with me. I'll just get something nice for three to four people."

She gave Kate a pat on the head, winked at Ginny and then rushed away to the counter to get the necessary food supplies to feed several hungry girls.

Katelyn flopped backward into her chair as Ralph pushed her down into the seat. She wasn't used to people taking care of her - rather, she was more used to taking care of things for herself or taking care of those she cared most about - but it did make sense not to leave the guest of honor all alone when it was her birthday. And if that's what Ralph wanted, she'd let her do it for the sake of her friend.

But after following Ralph's eyes to the far side of the lunchroom, she quickly became distracted and lost her train of thought entirely. "Hey, Liz!" Stretching upward from her seat, the short brunette waved enthusiastically at her special friend. "Liz! We're all having supper, with Ginny for her birthday!" Optimistic blue eyes shone in the direction of the young Seer, as did a smile that soon followed. "Won't you come too?"
