I'll be pretty busy with teaching and such next semester (in Ann Arbor, MI), but if you're able to make something come about, I'll try and get over there. I've been to five Abney Park shows now in Seattle (well, six if one counts their two events at SteamCon last weekend separately), and they've all been well worth it.
You know, I recently looked into train fares from Seattle to Michigan in preparation for my move, and it can be done rather cheaply--a single room is in the $450 range, and a coach seat is even less, so would that be more possible? I'm going to have a lot of baggage to bring with me for this teaching gig, and thought I'd like to do it via train and perhaps not suffer every moment of the trip rather than attempt to fly, get hassled, etc.
BTW, where are you doing your degree, and in what area of medieval studies do you primarily work/are you particularly interested in? *academic/medieval geek*
We've had....horrible train trips in the past and have sworn off that mode of travel for the moment. I've taken a train ride from Chicago to New Mexico, though...and it was one of the best trips I've ever been on--I realize that you will probably take a more northern route for at least part of the way if you go by train...but the crossing the great plains was actually pretty nifty. I'm a senior at Notre Dame--studying both Levantine and English/Irish history from about 500 on...and I've also picked up a few courses in Medieval archaeology.
