Yes, there are bits that aren't super nice, but that's to be expected from Supernatural - it is a horror show, after all...
WATCH IT because from the beginning it shows the complexity (very well observed and written, I thought) of Sam and Dean's relationship. It also starts off pretty slow with quite a lot of the normal types of episodes - i.e. not Apocalypse-related - which are still good.
It's not the case that EVERY episode will break your heart. In fact, I was surprised by how slow the pace was. And it is AWESOME. :)
Plus, think of all the new things that will happen that mean you will have more material to write fic about.
