tf_speedwriting Wednesday 29th September, prompt 4 - A choice between a selfish and selfless act.
Feedback makes friends. Flames dealt with by the masters of paranoia and fire, Red Alert and Inferno.
Prompt: 4
Time: 15 minutes
All he had to do was make the decision. He knew that he couldn’t look after the sparkling properly, not on his own.
Selfish. To keep the sparkling, even though he barely made enough credits to keep himself fuelled and maintained.
Selfless. To give the sparkling up to an orphanage where it had a chance of being cared for properly for the rest of its life.
Selfish. To keep the sparkling so he had some part of his mate with him. It was bad enough losing his mate, but to lose his sparkling as well would be torture.
Selfless. To give the sparkling up to an orphanage, knowing he probably wouldn’t survive the death of his mate. They hadn’t been bonded, but he still felt the loss as keenly as if they had been. That void in his spark, aching and growing with each cycle that passed.
Selfish. To keep the sparkling, to give himself something to live for, someone else to care for. And someone to care for him in return.
Selfless. To give the sparkling up to an orphanage where he had a chance of two loving parents, not just one who was miserable.
Decision made, he cradled the sparkling in his arms, looking down at the perfectly formed face, trying to etch it in his permanent memory banks.
“Never forget that I love you. And that I do this so you have a better future than I can provide for you.” He murmured to the sparkling.
The walk to the orphanage was the longest walk he’d ever taken, but he was content that his decision was the right one. The selfless one. That his sparkling… their sparkling survived was more important than his own happiness.
