BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - THE OPERA

Jan 30, 2014 07:41

When it was first mentioned that Annie Proulx would be writing the libretto for an opera based on Brokeback Mountain I got pretty excited about how she would tackle it and what, if any, insights it might shed on the original story. The opera is now here, being staged in Madrid, and it looks fabulous. I am more excited than I imagined I would be.

I have transcribed the libretto and posted it on a thread dedicated to the opera on Planet Heath Ledger.

There are also photos and articles posted there, plus the beginnings of a discussion about it all.

(Perhaps the most striking thing so far (to me) is that Annie Proulx has made a point about the great Kiss/No Kiss debate which caused such a ruckus a few years back. She has specifically mentioned in the libretto that the reunion kiss is the first one. How about that. Oh yes, and Jack is short, as per the short story.)

So come and join the discussion or just read all about it.
