Hmmm...

Something from Joe Mallozzi's blog:

1.) Is the SGC still in operation on Earth, or has the Stargate been moved to Homeworld Command in the Pentagon?

Answers: 1) All indications suggest it has been moved.

I'm sure this question comes from scenes in SGU that show the outside of the Pentagon then transition to O'Neill and staff. However, I hadn't ( Read more... )

today's question

After you posted this, I looked it up. Couldn't find much, but it does appear that the site is now an alternative and not the base of operations for NORAD, etc.

It's entirely possible that TPTB are trying to pattern it that way, or it could be that because the facility is shutting down/cutting back, they can't use the outside shot anymore. Or it could be that many SGU fans wouldn't recognize the Mountain complex if they didn't watch SG-1 and therefore TPTB are going with the more recognizable Pentagon shot (though, to be fair, it has always been established that O'Neill works in DC).

The other Stargates always played fast and loose enough with the relative locations of places on Earth -- not to mention the existence of Asgard beaming technology -- that I'd never assumed that the quick transition meant the gate was literally in DC. I'd say that's a big enough change from established canon that I'd wait for the show to specifically say so before considering it canon. Especially since DC seems, as other commenters have pointed out, an especially silly place to put it. :D

On top of that ... most SGA stories either take place within the timeframe of the show (when the gate is undeniably in Colorado) or post-series in Pegasus. I don't think the location of the gate matters unless the show deals with Earth (in which case, again, I'd be inclined to ignore this until/if we get canon confirmation).

Very true. I had never considered that the gate itself had moved. O'Neill was set as head of Homeworld Security after Hammond retired and has been based out of DC since then. The Pentagon shots made sense to me in that context.

Though, now that I think about it, I don't know why Young would be reporting to O'Neill and not to Landry. The same with Carter. I think I need to go ask JM a question on his blog. Several other folks have asked for clarification after the gate seemingly being in DC.

I don't know that we'll actually see it in canon since no one on SGU can use the Earth gate. Someone asked him the other day if anyone from SGA would be on SGU and he said possibly (his standard non-answer) but he followed it up with talk about how it would fit in the timeline. It's possible that something in the SGA or SG-1 movies factors into this.

But, you're right. Fanfic-wise, this won't matter much to me. Though it does make my brain do funny things.

Hey, if you're asking questions anyway, can you ask if Kanaan and Torren were on Atlantis when it came to Earth? Because THAT, I am dying to know. :D But I don't really want to register/comment just to ask.

Though, now that I think about it, I don't know why Young would be reporting to O'Neill and not to Landry. The same with Carter.

Because Beau Bridges was too expensive? ;p

No ... though you've got a point, perhaps Jack is a particularly hands-on boss, or is taking a personal interest in the Destiny situation?

but he followed it up with talk about how it would fit in the timeline.

What did he say about the timeline? Now I'm curious if SGU is supposed to be taking place in Atlantis's "realtime" -- that is, a year to two years ahead of where the series ended.

I posted my question about Landry. We'll see if he answers.

And I didn't have to ask about Torren and Kanaan. Someone asked about that a while back.

Answer: Although we didn’t see them, Kanaan and Torren made the trip back to Earth with Teyla.

Plus...

Answer: Yes, they will.

If you ever decide to post a comment on his blog, you don't actually have to sign up or anything. You put in your name (whatever name you want - I use my GW username) and your email address (which is NOT published) then type in your comment.

If they are going to move it anywhere seems DIA or NSA
Although Pentagon obviously is seat of military it would seem stargate would be best directed to Defense Intelligence Agency or National Security Agency
which is more specific.
They did a poor job in SGA with military matters, so not surprised they
are doing same with SGU
They NEED a military adviser.

To be fair, this actually has little to do with SGU. We never see the Earth gate on there so that's just Joe is saying is implied. It's hard for me to criticize a move that may or may not have happened without knowing the reasons behind it. In universe, there may be a very good reason for it being in the Pentagon.

Interesting. Beth and I's Help-Haiti story takes place after EATG, but I'm not sure if we'll acknowledge this or not in the story. At the time of EATG, it was still in Colorado, so we'll either use this for the fic, or ignore it since it's not technically canon for SGA.

Hmmm, upon thinking ab out it, it might solve a logistical issue. Thanks for the pointer.

Remember that Pegasus gates supersede Milky Way gates, so now that the City of Ancients is located on Earth, the Earth gate won't work any more. That would make Cheyenne Mountain defunct and they would probably move the SGC to Atlantis anyway because its more technologically advanced.

Pretty stupid to move it to the Pentagon anyway...

True, however, it makes less sense to have off-world missions running out of Atlantis for simply logistical reasons. Are they keeping a ship in orbit to beam people in and out of Atlantis? Did they move all of the SGC personnel to Atlantis? What about their families? After all, most of these people lived off-base. They had lives in Colorado Springs. Not that it couldn't be explained away, but it seems so much more difficult to plop all of them on a city hiding in the middle of the ocean as opposed to just disabling the Atlantis gate so that it isn't interfering with the Earth gate.

The gate might not be at the Pentagon. It could be at Andrews or another military base.

And no need to be anonymous. I don't bite. :)
