Is it weird that people can pass out at readings of Palahniuk's Guts, and I'm really not even phased by it? It kind of worries me.

I watched the Squid and the Whale last night- a movie that I bought at a gas station for $10. I still can't think of a decent way to describe how empty this film felt- as though Anderson was trying so hard to help ( Read more... )

Guts was a very unpleasant read, but it didn't upset me nearly as much as say, Joyce Carol Oates' 'Where are you going, where have you been?', Charlotte Perkins Gillman's 'The Yellow Wallpaper' or Kelly Link's 'Stone Animals'.

Possibly because all three are much more psychological than Guts, or maybe it's just women writers who can TERRORfy me.

Coming to America! I love James Earl Jones.

Guts didn't even strike me as psychological, so much as just a heavy attempt to gross out readers. But yeh. I wasn't really impressed with it. I'll have to check out the ones you mentioned, though.

And yes! I think that lately my tastes in film have shifted back to appreciating the things I saw when I was younger- which would explain my recent love of Coming to America and Trading Places. I do love some James Earl Jones, though. Have you heard him reading the Bible? I haven't, but only because I think Revelations might be too frightening.

No, but you're right about it being frightening. Forget Morgan Freeman as God, I want to see Thulsa Doom smite some people.

oh dude, i've heard. i wish that i'd found that at the 6th st. flash market, instead.

ps- i had a sneaking suspicion about something that happens to one of the characters in 6-ft. my willpower is pretty nonexistant, so i went ahead and googled it. i was right, and it suxxors.

well it started innocently enough- i was reading about the show and someone mentioned how the series finale just has clips of how they all die in the future. so i figured it wouldnt hurt me to watch it. so i did, and when claire is first driving away and she sees nate jogging down the street, it just didnt feel right. plus hes got that whole "brain disorder" thing now.

so yeh. i googled it. and i was right, but i was afraid that it was going to happen a lot sooner than it did (s5?). i suck.

I think the people passing out are idiots who actually tried to hold their breath through the entire reading like he says there at the start. Although, the first time I saw a story on 20/20 about some poor kid getting his ass caught in a pool drain it did make me go "ewwwwww!"

I've never understood what people find so scary about "the yellow wallpaper". It does nothing for me.

haha, probably. and stuff like that actually happens? that's pretty gross, but then again i don't know how i would feel about it in person.

btw- i meant to tell you that if you need some help fixing up the new shop, give me a call! i would love to help out! plus i kinda like painting and building things, now. the pictures you posted of the store make it look pretty rad.

Yeah, the pool drain danger is real. Check it out

I don't know if the level of dirty in the shop is something I can handle mostly on my own or if I'll need help. I'll for sure let you know if I have a cleaning party. There are about five or six other people who also have offered their help. :)
I'm gonna start cleaning Thursday morning and work on it all day Friday and part of Saturday. Hopefully I'll also get an electrician in there to install some lights because you can't clean what you can't see lurking there in the dark, right?
I probably won't paint until later in the week when it warms up and stops being rainy because I'm pretty sure I'll want to have the transom thing above the door open to let out the fumes. There is pleanty of time to get it done since they still haven't sent me my sales tax id number yet and I need that to be able to order yarn, which will then take at least 3-4 weeks to show up if what people have told me about delivery times is true. blah
