I am such a failure

First car 'accident' ever.  Barely an accident.  Rear-ended the guy from a stopped position at a red light because my foot came off the brake while I was checking the GPS and I was too busy trying to figure out my route to pay attention.  Inflicted a paint scratch approximately an inch long.

Really sketchy looking guy walks out and spits out some ( Read more... )

I'm so sorry to hear that, DL. It's going to be okay. I'm sorry, I don't know anything about driving or driver licenses, but he might give it back if he just took it by accident. Maybe you can even settle this outside of insurance.

I'm sure someone knows what to do, though, so hang tight, okay? ;u;

You can apparently get a new license at the DMV, which is good, right ;u; But I would think he would want to contact you to sort out payment and stuff and you can get it back. Just take deep breaths ;u;

Thank you, Scarfle. I'm sure you're right, like 99% of people are really probably honest and nice and this guy probably just hasn't called me yet because he either didn't notice or because he wants to get his car looked at first so he doesn't have to deal with the awkwardness of talking to the idiot kid who rear-ended him too much.

Like the super duper worst case scenario is what I automatically leap to which is that honestly the scratch could easily go unfixed and he might just not call me and keep the license and do all sorts of unscrupulous things with it. The license can be replaced easily, yes but there's no way of saying 'I lost it can you disable my old number' or whatever because the DMV in my state apparently doesn't care.

Blargh. I need to . . . stop being so negative. And believe that people are Good. Thanks for trying to help, Scarfle. =)

lmao I'm so sorry I can't help more. I just... don't have a license... But I'm pretty sure they get lost all the time. And I would think anybody who would get so angry about the scratch would want someone else to pay it and contact you and give it back ;u;

Just make sure the phone is always on! Taking action in a few days sounds like a good to me. ;u;

I hope they do. Maybe that's why the DMV doesn't care about disabling them in the case of loss? I actually don't know much about licenses either despite having one, aha. And you've helped fine! Thank you for trying to make me feel better. I was sort of pacing back and forth all afternoon and night waiting for the phone to ring.

I am hoping it was simply an accident due to impatience.

I'm reluctant to read through the 10 other replies.

But have you called the police yet? I hope you did.

Sorry to hear that :(

I did. I was afraid to, but they were a lot nicer than I thought they would be. Everything that happened could have been avoided if I wasn't such an idiot.

Call the police in any case, explain to them the situation. They'll probably want to have you file a report. I ended up having to do that with my hit-and-run (I had much of the same situation, except she hit me and when I asked to get her info, she booked).

I've had my wallet with my driver's license stolen before. That's something that you can report to the police as well when you write the report. But I'm fairly certain that you should be able to order a new copy of your driver's license online from the DMV. But it'll be okay. Deep breaths, all right?

*hugs then hunts this dude down*

Augh, that's terrible. Did they end up catching her?

I'm feeling better after sleeping. =) Thanks. I did a lot of googling and stuff and it shouldn't be too hard to get it replaced and I did end up talking to the police and they said that a stolen/lost/missing driver's license shouldn't be too big of a problem, so. Everything will be alright! Maybe.
