I can see where you think chivalry is about power - but I actually enjoy being on the receiving end. It's nice to be treated by people who are often too selfish to do so otherwise.

There's nothing wrong with people being nice to one another, but it's not chivalry less it's one-sided anyway :o)

The whole buying drinks, gifts, meals and opening doors stuff is what I do for people, espicially people I'm romantically interested in, but I rather expect it back sometimes as well :o)

Definetly right that at least this part of England has the door opening thing mostly right, which probably just reinforces the one, if I met a person who felt that it was not respectful to not open a door for women, but wouldn't bother for a man, there would seem something rather odd and strange about it!

Although I have spoken to some people in certain parts of America who do find the idea of opening a door for a man odd, and I've spoken to a couple of British men who will open the door for men, but they won't go to the same effort... they won't try to get to the door first, or 'stand on ceremony' waiting for the woman to arrive, which both strike me as a bit silly :o)

I did write a little something on double standards in regards to violence a while back, and I think you're right that mostly it's academic anyway as most good people won't start violence with anyone, I think the problem is those situations were a male is attacked by a woman and it's judged less harshly than the other way around. I've also known women who like to use ( ... )

However I can confess to occasionally having allowed myself to become emotionally involved in debates and thus to have spent time arguing with people for no good reason at all to the point of it becoming unpleasant, although I'm glad to say that it's not something I can recall happening on VF in any significant degree. Why would I do such a thing? It doesn't make any sense; if I'm not enjoying myself it's time to stop posting...Or perhaps it's about ambition and so called intellectual masochism ;) Where ambition is involved, consciousness does not necessarily follow, however, I'd prefer call it "common sense" but I know you don't like this term ( ... )

I think I can understand not wishing to waste one's time on certain parts of academia. I for instance have little interest in Geography, I think the issue comes in when we're talking about things that clearly do have an interest for people.

Like thier system of morality, or the structure and foundations of thier belief, thier purposes and goals of thier life and individual action, and basic understanding of who and what they are.

May seem a bit of bias there because the above is essentially 'Philosophy' and I'm a philosophy academic, but I guess that's why I value philosophy so much, it's something that feels like it has relevance to everyone.

Though maybe there's a 'if it works, don't fix it, or try to understand it' type of thought. If I'm driving a car I don't always worry about how the car runs. Certainly that may be the case for someone who is pyschologically functional and who doesn't care for pyschology as a dicipline, and it might account for less interest in philosophy ( ... )
