"I take it you're not hungry?"

I don't hide the laughter in my voice. A wiser man might, given the ire in her voice, but wisdom is not a trait I've been burdened with. Though the Black Widow is dangerous at the best of times, I'm the Man Without Fear... Not to mention without an explanation for why there are so many birds hanging around.

For a moment I wonder if my senses aren't deceiving me, but there's nothing to suggest they are. (Particularly when coupled with Natasha's bad mood.) This morning has been a thing of chaos. Filled with the sounds and tastes and smells of a New York street after the Avengers have bagged their latest bad guy. It's exciting.

"And here I was thinking about asking you to lunch."

"You were not," Natalia replies, voice as hard as her eyes on the nearest gull. "You were considering the swiftest way to piss me off, and you needn't bother."

Pulling her hand away from the bird that wants to light on it, Natalia turns to face him. Oh, he's not even trying to hide his delight. "As you no doubt hear, today's irritations are already in abundant supply." Her eyes narrow. "Are you affected?"

"Not that I know of," I say, lifting up my hands to show they're clean, literally and metaphorically. When you're as aware of your body as I am, though, that's tantamount to a resounding no.

"What's with all the birds?"

"It's my power," says Natalia simply. "I've spent nearly all my life in the presence of those gifted with truly extraordinary powers." Her fingers find her chin and rest there, perhaps to hold her head high under the weight of her humiliation, or perhaps simply to avoid having them mistaken for a wriggling worm.

"Flight, fire, regeneration, speed." She lets her hands fall to her hips. "I can speak to seagulls."
