the sun goes down and the world goes dancing

Occasionally, I get this strange urge to blog. It's not terribly often, but once every few weeks, usually after I've been reading someone else's and have been struck by how interesting and glamorous it makes them sound, a little switch will flick in my head and I'll go, "Hey, I want to do that too!" Unfortunately these urges come most often at ( Read more... )

Check out "The Fountain" if you haven't yet, it's another English major sort of film. It has a lot in common with "Blade Runner" in terms of unconventional approach, but in pretty much no other way. (It's also beautiful, and rather like a poem in cinematic format. A big-budget arthouse film. The soundtrack makes me want to sob for hours, in the good sense, and I need to find sheet music for it.)

Last episode of this series of "Doctor Who" was shown the other day. Are you caught up yet? I loved it, and beyond that I'm not going to comment.

You saw the Squirrel Nut Zippers live, I hate you.

Hrm, I might have heard of it. Then again, possibly not. It sounds familiar, but I might be thinking of something else entirely. (Thanks again for making me watch Brick. I've shared it 'round at college, and my friend Quincy loved it so much he got it for Christmas.) Big-budget arthouse films rule... have you seen Art School Confidential, by the way? It's s'posed to be good, and is next in line, that's why I ask.

Not at all. In fact, I haven't seen any more past "Gridlock"-- part of the problem is I don't have any good long chunks of downloading time any more, since I don't like to leave the computer on and unattended when I'm at work for eight+ hours at a stretch, and I can't sleep with it on, either.

I did! They did an excellent rendition of "The Ghost of Stephen Foster" and "Put a Lid On It", and even covered the Magnetic Fields' song Stephen Merritt wrote for Katharine Whalen. *thumbs nose*

It was directed by Darren Aronofsky, and Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz were in it. (And had a highly erratic/non-existent cinema release over here, forcing me to download it. I'll buy the DVD though.) I'm having a very hard time describing it in a way that does it justice though, so just watch it if you get a chance. 'S good. ("Brick" is awesome, glad to hear that you're spreading the love for it. Keep doing that.) Haven't seen "Art School Confidential," no, but I'll try to track it down. Let me know if it's worth seeing.

That might be my fault too, for warning you about the two rather weak episodes you're about to hit. Oh well, watch them when you can, and rest assured that things do pick up.

Once again, hatred expressed. Not that I shouldn't complain too much, I've seen the Decemberists, Low, and Joanna Newsom in the past couple of months, so I'm not completely gig-deprived. (Did you catch the subtle note of gloating there? REVENGE.) Also, that reminds me, need more Magnetic Fields.

As far as I've gleaned, one either loves or loathes Philip Glass. I feel that, being a music major and because my mother sang in the world premiere of his opera "The Voyage", that I ought to listen to some of his music. But I really haven't...
