This is SUCH a sweet and wonderfully paced story. The whole vibe of the plot and the way you describe things just feels spot on. I feel so, so sorry for Arthur, here's to hoping he and Merlinc an think things through and sort it out for him!

I'm really glad you liked the joke - I believe that a lame joke told in the right way can and should be absolutely hilarious. Also, lame jokes are kind of Merlin's style IMO... :)

Merlin opened Arthur's eyes up to thinking about what he wants rather than just going along with what his father wants. His insomnia and agitation leading up to finally telling Uther he's unhappy with his position and the pressure was well realized and Uther not being understanding or sympathetic was dreadfully in character. Uther's dismissal was hard to read.

Arthur seeking Merlin out and finding all the understanding and sympathy that Uther lacked opened the floodgates. Merlin is lovely but he can't fix Arthur, he can only be there as Arthur fixes himself. I hope he does it before he collapses.
