Melbourne home for Wicked?

Producers are believed to be eyeing a February 2008 opening for the forthcoming Australian production of Wicked, and Melbourne is expected to be its home.

While an Australian season of the tuner is yet to be confirmed, latest rumours suggest a deal is close to being done to bring the tuner here in February, with Helen Dallimore in the lead role of Glinda.

Wicked opened on Broadway in 2003 and despite mixed reviews, became a theatrical phenomenon and is still playing to capacity audiences at every performance. The show opened in London last year and in a major Australian coup, Dallimore was handed the coveted role of Glinda.

Wicked features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, and is loosely based on the best selling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Macguire. The musical tells the “back story” to The Wizard of Oz, focusing on Glinda (the good witch) and Elphaba (the wicked witch of the west) and their unlikely friendship that developed long before Dorothy dropped in.

If Wicked did open in February, it would mean that it would be playing at the same time as Spamalot and Priscilla in the Victorian capital.
