Nipplegate

May 26, 2006 09:56

I am not sure how many of you on my friends list are aware of the drama that started last weekend in regards to what is and isn't allowed per LJ's TOS for default user icons. A gentleman was reported for having an artistic nude showing Bea Arthur topless and he decided to start reporting other icons, including breastfeeding icons, to prove his ( Read more... )

Still reeling at the utter stupidity and duplicity that has been displayed in this 'debate'. Have signed the petition and will spread the word!

It's been extremely sad for me as well. My company has a permanent account here, and not only have I had a personal paid account for years, I regularly gift friends for more paid LJ time for their accounts.

I am loathe to leave because I am involved in so many communities here, and am hoping that somehow we can find a way to bring about positive change, not just on the exempting of nursing icons from online indecency rules, but also on the extreme lack of customer service front.

Came here because I noticed the icon you used on wisteria_'s journal and wanted to show my support. I am utterly speechless at the way LJ has treated especially with me living in a country where it's unlawful for anyone to stop a nursing mother breastfeeding in public.

Do you mind if I link to this post to help spread the word and also could I snag the icon?

The people on OTF wank have never been less funny nor more overwhelmingly wanky than in their posts upon this subject. The behavior they've been showing, if displayed on any other community, would have gotten the posts mocked by the first reply.

However, a few of the icons in use by the protestors- especially the one of hairy pierced-nippled breasts with no baby in sight- have not helped anyone's case, nor has the use of famine baby graphics.

Meanwhile, the idiot who started the whole thing is not receiving any consequences for being a TOS report troll, and that's what bothers me the most.

Julia, (who breastfed both kids well into the OTF_Wank's zone of "That kid's too old to nurse")

I agree that I am personally bothered by there being no consequence for the gent who singlehandedly started "Nipplegate" particularly since I view his actions to be cowardly. It's so easy to get others to fight his battles for him, and I don't think he even realizes the damage he's caused to nursing and parenting communities alike across LJ where nursing icon users are being suspended and all of their good advice and years of lactivism are going "poof" as if they never existed ( ... )

After twenty years plus nine months of mothering, I've pretty much based my life on the concept of picking my battles and doing what works, and while I'm fully on the side of the "lactivists" on an objective level, I also think they're going about it in a way which is ultimately destructive of their core purposes ( ... )

Oy, the target onsie issue. I hear that!

I do think that the group of nursing moms at boob_nazis is overall handling the situation very well, given the strong feelings on the issue. We have a representative (the exec director of ProMom.org) working directly with the powers that be at Six Apart trying to come to some sort of peaceful resolution on the nursing aspect of this issue, and as antsy as many of us are, we want to give her the space and support to do her job. I don't think we could ask for a better advocate than Carrie. She's the perfect combination of passionate and professional, and if anyone can get the job done without us having to resort to going to the media, she's the one ( ... )
