Title: Free Me If You Can
Rating: PG
Pairing: Gelphie
Summary: Bookverse. Unfortunately, this is one of those typical Gelphie plotlines I usually avoid - Elphaba is supposed to kill Glinda. But I was listening to Scott Alan's "Magic" (Julia Murney version) and I just had to write this.
Disclaimer: They aren't mine, and the title (and what it says in the cut) are from "Magic."
Glinda was sitting over Elphaba when she awoke, twirling a strand of black hair around her fingers. Surprisingly, the first words she spoke weren’t “Good morning” or something just as likely.
“You aren’t happy,” she said. “You cry out in your sleep.”
Elphaba frowned, reaching a hand to cup Glinda’s face. “Did I wake you?”
“I didn’t sleep at all.”
“I meant to be gone before you woke,” Elphaba whispered.
“I know. That’s why I didn’t sleep.” Glinda shifted to lie down beside Elphaba, looping an arm over her waist. “Why are you doing this if it makes you so unhappy?”
“Doing what?”
“Whatever it is you do.”
Elphaba sound herself pulling Glinda closer and fighting back tears. “I kill people. I’m an assassin.”
“No,” Glinda breathed. “Elphie…”
The tears found a way out, and Glinda tried to move to wipe them away when she heard Elphaba gasp in pain, but the green woman held her too tightly. “It’s true, my sweet, that’s what they have me doing.”
“Killing people doesn’t fix anything.”
“I know.”
“You’re much too gentle. I can’t see you hurting anything.”
Elphaba was shocked to hear an audible sob escaping from her lips, and Glinda gripped her so tightly that she was sure her fingers would leave bruises. “There’s no way out.”
“We’ll find a way.” Glinda pressed a soft kiss to Elphaba’s shoulder, all she could reach. “There’s got to be a way. I’ll ask Chuffrey for money… We can run away somewhere.”
“If I leave, they’ll kill me.” Elphaba bit her lip as one of Glinda’s tears dripped onto her skin, not making a sound. “I almost wish they would. I’d rather be dead.”
“Elphaba.”
“But I can’t die. It would leave you unprotected.” She let go of Glinda, reaching for the dress she’d discarded the night before and finding a hidden pocket within it. The blonde shifted beside her, wiping away all hints of tears and kissing Elphaba softly as the green woman pulled out a sheet of paper and a knife and handed it to Glinda.
“What’s this?” Glinda threw the knife back on the ground before unfolding the piece of paper. “Names,” she breathed, tracing a finger down the list. There were friends, acquaintances, people she’d only heard of… And her own name. “Is this…”
“Yes.” Elphaba shuddered, drawing Glinda closer. “You’re not a huge target, but they feel you could end up being significant. I did everything I could to get you on my list.” She kissed Glinda’s forehead. “I’ll kill everyone in Oz before I’ll touch a hair on your head.”
“I love you,” Glinda whispered, her voice shaking. She leaned up to look into Elphaba’s eyes, wishing she could soothe the terror in them. “We’ll find a way.”
“There is no way,” Elphaba replied.
“There’s always a way.” Glinda slid out of Elphaba’s arms and got up, tucking the list and the knife back into the pocket before handing her the dress. While the green woman dressed, Glinda pulled a book from her shelf and began flipping through it.
“You need to leave the city. Tell Chuffrey you’re in danger.”
“I’m not going anywhere without you.”
Elphaba sighed, and Glinda flipped faster. “I can’t stay with you, Glinda. Last night was wonderful, but we have to face reality.”
“Reality,” Glinda said, pausing to read a page more closely, “is that there’s always a way.” She held out the book, and Elphaba stared at it for a moment.
“I have no idea what that says.”
“It’s a spell.” Glinda gave the closest thing to a smile that Elphaba had seen since they finished last night. “There’s always a way.”
