The Eve of Poverty

Feb 09, 2006 23:43

After the Imam Husayn had been killed, the soldiers of the Yazeedi army stripped him of his valuable clothes and jewelry and then proceeded towards the Imam's camp to burn and loot the tents.

Cheer up, bucko! You never know when you'll see him again! I understand where you're coming from, but there have been people whom I thought I'd never again see, but as luck would have it, I bumped into them at random ( ... )

I dunno.. I've NEVER seen him anywhere else. But then again, I don't go out a lot. So I'm still hanging on the loose thread of hope that I'll meet Herb somewhere.

And hey, you know that the girls are just waiting in a huge queue to give you their number, right?

I just think it's fascinating how people in your country seem to take this whole thing seriously. I mean, u actually go to these "Muharram" days...whatever they are. It's just something I'm not used to seeing, growing up in the Lebanese culture. Usually, young people who take part in things like that, we view as exremely religous and sometimes weird. Not saying that you are, but that is what is fascinating...that you guys seem to take part in stuff like that, and it's norm for you. I think that's cool.

Well, it's only the Shi'as who tend to take it seriously. The Sunnis go about their work, not really bothered about what day of the Islamic month it is.
A lot of the people there aren't extremely religious, they're just moderate Shi'as. It's actually one of the two times of the year [the other being Ramadan] when Shi'as from all walks of life can gather in that place, so they get a huge crowd in Muharram and Ramadan.
I wasn't going there for religious purposes.. it was just that I admire the Imam Husayn a lot and the telling of the tragedy of Karbala always gets me emotional.

well, if you were to say that you get all emotional about that story to a Lebanese muslim, they'd probably assume that you're very devout and overzealous (esp since you're young). You're right though, even in Lebanon the Shi3as always take things like that more seriously than Sunnis but still, we don't obsess over it like other Shi3as (not that that is necessarily good or bad).

Thank you so much for sharing those stories with us! They were so terribly sad but very powerful and meaningful too. <3

Your friend Aleks is right: you meet up with people in unexpected places! And I second the motion of opening with a "Didn't I see you at...?" It's subtle, non-threatening and shows a common interest. I always run into people at fast food restaurants. I take that back. I ran into a girl from my high school in Vancouver at a play two years ago. But mostly fast food restaurants.

It was completely my pleasure :)

I'm just hoping and praying that I meet Herb somewhere. He doesn't seem like a guy who would go to malls or places like that.. but then you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Gee, I so hope he lives right here in the Meadows. Then we can have making-out sessions every week.
