omg wow. that is so stupid. one other thing that gets to me is that in hinduism, if a woman is on her period, she is not allowed to perform pujas, or enter sacred rooms etc. all because she is apparently 'unclean'. it makes no sense!!! it is unbelievably stupid that people still follow this outrageous rule.

It's not just Hinduism that does that. Muslim women are not allowed to pray, fast, read the Qur'an etc when they're menstruating. Similar restrictions on Orthodox Jewish women. Girl power!

Religion is often what you make of it. It's more than a series of explanations concatenated together to form a string of stories. In your example of the philtrum, the main purpose is not to explain where the it comes from-- but to emphasize that God wants them to learn the Torah, but won't make it easy. A hundred or more random explanations can be given for why something is so-- the point of religion is to explore why the explanation handed down to you is important. And it's not there to replace the scientific explanation, but to add a layer of depth to your outlook on life ( ... )

As I said, I was only using this as an example to illustrate my point. It's probably not exactly what is taught in synagogues but there are hundreds of baseless claims that religions make that have been disproved by scientific research.
