Jun 02, 2011 22:20

At the beginning of this month, I created a thread at icon_talk here where people could ask me questions regarding my icons, and I've finally decided to do this now.

Well, cutting off at the eyebrows isn't really bad per se, but I much prefer the eyes. In the middle of their forehead on the other hand...

(caps picked were extremely random!)

thanks. i don't think the top three look weird, i just think they are kind of boring compared to the bottom three. can you maybe look at some of my posts briefly and give your opinion? my username is my graphic journal.

Well, it is and will always be just a personal preference. I'm sure there are makers with faaar better cropping skills who actually prefer what I don't, so it doesn't really matter. Usually it depends a lot on the cap though, and those were just really quickly and randomly chosen ( ... )

wow. thank you for all that. i don't think i am a bad cropper. i do see a crop in most caps i use i go for it. sometimes i dont see one but i like the cap so i try to go for it. maybe it doesn't work. i still don't think there are any rules as far as cropping go. i do try to be unique. i am not sure what happened with tigger's tail. i think i did it that way because that was the only way i could include the amount of each character i wanted. same with 50 the stock in the other post, i wanted to include here crown and eyes and i knew not to cut off her mouth so i tried to center it and i lost some chin. as far as those lost ones though, i cant take credit for those. i do agree though i can make more creative crops with lost because of how beautiful the actual show is. i love making lost icons.anyways, thank you for all your insight.

i looked at goodfringeicons. the icons are gorgeous! id never qualify. i love fringe but i find it hard to icon.

Well yeah, my main rule for cropping: if YOU think it looks good, why should anyone try and tell you otherwise? You learn by experience and after a while you like certain things better and like other things less. Which is natural.
Yeah, I was just basing on cropping, I have no idea how the actual images are. The number 50 one was great because the crown and the eyes were the most important aspects of the icon and the focus was indeed on those, as it should be.

I find Fringe hard to icon as well. Unless it's Olivia. And her hair. So you're not alone :)

sorry. are you saying you like the top three better than the bottom three because for some reason i am liking the bottom three, especially the third one. it looks mysterious.

If you're talking about the example crops I did in this thread then yes, it's the bottom three I like better.

Hi! Sorry for the wait!

So I went and looked at the LOST icon batch you mentioned, and I really like the cropping there, although I have to say I especially love 27, 31, 36, 37, 39, 41, 53, and 56. My least favorite one has to be 50 since the cropping in combination with the coloring makes it hard to still distinguish Jack, but that's about the only complaint. Apart from the cropping, I think the coloring looks a little pale (since LOST is so colorful), but there's really no concrit for that, that's just taste. Unless it was radio active or something, heh :P

hey don't knock radio active coloring ;) thanks so much for your concrit, you are the bomb. i am rewatching lost with my daughter (i broke down and bought the DVDs) and we just watched the one where boone died. i cried all over again.

LOL, there's (extreme) bright and then there's radio active, and while I'm an extreme fan of the first, I'm not so much of the latter :P
Aww, LOST must be so great to rewatch. Although, all those sad scenes all over again.. Has your daughter already seen LOST once or is it a first time watch for her?
