It felt like he was staring down from the edge of a vertical cliff, heat of the sun drawing out beads of sweat on his bare shoulders, his toes gripping at the edge of the abyss, at the edge of his sanity. He'd never been afraid of heights, never felt that slamming warning in his gut telling him to step back. And he found no reason to start now.

Taking a ragged, panting breath, he let a cry tear free of his dark, raw throat and dropped himself down onto Jin, letting the samurai's familiar moan catch him.

Wait. Wait for it. Right...there.

That was it. That one brief instant, that instant that caught Jin's eyes squeezed shut, his mouth open just enough for a rough breath to escape, his nails leaving purple marks in Mugen's shoulders.

That instant when Mugen knew that he was completely in control, when Jin's composure blinked. That rare upper hand. Mugen steadied himself for dominance...

...for only a brief instant before Jin squinted, grunted, and flipped him hard onto his back.

Mugen was many things. Criminal. Pirate. Low-life. Ruffian.

But, head tossed back, knobby throat exposed, mouth agape, sweat running down his face, he was beautiful. The way he led each movement with his sharp shoulders, the way he transferred weight from his knees to the balls of his feet and back again. The way he pushed off the wall of the cabin with his spine to arch into the ache.

Jin rolled his eyes, pulled his spectacles off the bridge of his nose and tossed them aside.

"Would you stop staring at yourself and pay attention?"
