“Hi Daddy!” Megan yelled, the front door slamming behind her as her backpack crashed to the ground. Scotty stepped out of the office and into the living room just in time to see her disappearing up the stairs, the echoes of her pounding footsteps lingering in the air.
“Come back here, please,” Scotty called after her.
Within seconds, Megan was leaning over the railing of the landing and looking down at Scotty. “I have to go to the bathroom,” she explained urgently.
Scotty nodded. “OK. Then come down after that.”
Megan disappeared again, and Scotty cringed at the hinge-rocking bang of the bathroom door. Scotty changed direction and entered the kitchen to pull together an after-school snack for Megan. As he was washing off some grapes, Megan rushed into the room and threw her arms around Scotty.
“Oof,” he said, trying to keep his balance as she squeezed. “How was your day?”
“Good,” Megan said, stealing a grape. “Can we go over to Grandma’s tonight?”
“Probably. Why?”
“I have to do an interview for school.”
Scotty handed her the bowl of fruit, and they both walked over to the table. “What for?”
“English. We have to write the love story of our parents, and the only people we can’t talk to are our parents. It’s due on Valentine’s Day.”
Scotty stared back at her.
“Disgusting, I know,” Megan agreed.

After dinner, Kevin, Scotty, Kitty and Evan chatted in the den while Nora and Megan sat at the kitchen counter.
“OK, honey. What do you need to know?”
Megan carefully arranged her notebook and pencil as she answered. “I just am going to have everyone tell me their top one or two stories about Dad and Daddy and then put them together in order.”
“This sounds like such a fun project.”
Megan made a face.
“Oh, what? What’s that for?” Nora teased.
“I just don’t want to think about them as, you know...”
“Young and in love?”
“Exactly.”
“And kissing?”
Megan scoffed. “Please. I have to deal with that all the time. I have to knock whenever I want to enter a room. My friends think it’s sooo romantic, because none of their parents ever kiss in front of them.” She paused, leaned forward and added with a shudder, “Some of them even think it’s...you know. Hot. Ugh, gross.”
Nora laughed. She stood as she replied, “I guess it’s different if you’re not related to them. Wait here, I’m going to go get some visual aids.”
Megan looked after her, confused. Nora quickly returned, however, and the photo album in her hand answered Megan’s questions.
“OK, my first story is from way back when your parents first met. It was shortly after Grandpa died, and I was feeling kind of lonely. Your dad wasn’t seeing anyone, and so I kind of...latched onto him a bit. We made plans to go to this memorial golf tournament but then we went to a movie instead. I knew that Kevin had tentative plans with someone and I guessed it was Scotty, but I basically ignored that. I didn’t think much of it, because he never really...well, he hadn’t had too many major relationships before then. So I didn’t think it was that serious.”
Nora paused, smiling as she watched Megan writing furiously, copying her every word. While Megan finished the last sentence, Nora opened the photo album and pulled out a picture near the front.
“Here’s a picture from the first time I met Scotty. It was a dinner party.”
“Aw, Dad looks so young - what is that thing on Daddy’s head?”
Nora laughed. “He called it the...um...the toucan.”
“Ew.”
“It wasn’t really his best look.”
Megan simply shook her head, still staring at the picture in train-wreck-style shock.
“So, anyway, we went to a movie. Um...Two for the Road. And while we were waiting in line, your dad just honed in on someone, excused himself and walked away. I realized he was heading over to meet Scotty. I rushed over to say hi, and that’s when your daddy introduced me to his date.”
Megan looked up in surprise.
“Yep, some other guy. I suggested we all sit together, and Kevin nearly tripped over himself trying to get out of that. Later, he just tore into me about needing his own life and not expecting him to fill a void and how he should have been on a date that night.”
“Did his voice get really high?”
“Yeah.”
Megan nodded. “That always happens when he freaks out.”
Nora laughed. “Always. And that’s when I first started to suspect there was more to the story than just dinner with a cute witness.”
Megan smiled softly and then did a quick double-take as she remembered she was supposed to be taking notes. Picking up her pencil, she jotted down a few keyword reminders.
“Did you have another story?”
“Ah,” Nora replied, smiling. She flipped several pages in the photo album and pulled out another picture. She handed it to Megan, who laughed.
“Your dad was so very, very adamant. It was simply a commitment ceremony. It was not a wedding. It could be nice, but there was no reason to go overboard with the decorations or anything else.”
“And they really got married, like, five minutes after they got engaged?”
Nora nodded. “Yep. Your daddy and I cooked, Tommy supplied the wine, Kitty did the ceremony, and we hired a little quartet for music. Everything was perfect.”
“Including the decorations, I see.”
Nora laughed. “I always felt that, if they had just given me a little more time...” She shook her head. “I got to help plan Sarah’s wedding. And Kitty’s and Tommy’s and later Justin’s. And the thing is, I always knew...”
Nora took a breath. “I always knew the others would get married someday. And they could have it whenever and wherever and however they wanted. Any dream they might have had about the perfect wedding day - but back then...I’m not sure how much you know, but back then - ”
“It wasn’t legal.”
Nora shook her head. “No. And it wouldn’t be recognized by a lot of people as...the same thing.”
“Like my other grandma?”
Nora paused, unwilling to say anything negative.
“It’s OK,” Megan said. “I figured that out a long time ago.”
Nora sighed and continued with her story. “I really doubted whether Kevin would ever find someone, that one person who would make him want to settle down and grow up and take that risk. And I was so happy that he had, and I wanted to do something, but he just wouldn’t let me.” Nora laughed. “So before Kevin got to the house, I was talking with your daddy - that was one of the first times I ever spent any real time with just him - and I got him to agree to ‘one or two small flowers.’”
Megan looked at the picture again, eyebrows raised.
“I got a little carried away,” Nora agreed.

“Most memorable story about Kevin and Scotty...hmmm....” Kitty said as she prepared bowls of ice cream for the two of them. She and Nora had switched, and Nora was now talking with Kevin and Scotty. Evan had long since abandoned them for the computer games up in his bedroom.
“Well,” Kitty said, sitting down at the counter and handing one of the sundaes to Megan. “I was talking to Sarah the morning after Valentine’s Day. I was feeling a little crazy, because it was the first time Robert and I - uh,” Kitty broke off, laughing nervously.
“Aunt Kitty, I’m 16 years old. I know what sex is.”
“Right, so. I was talking to her about that, and then got a call from Kevin. So I switched over, and he’s freaking out about his own...Valentine’s Day adventures. I couldn’t remember the last time he had been so frazzled by, you know, sex.”
Megan looked up at her, confused. “But why? They met in October or something, Daddy said. It couldn’t possibly have been their first time.”
Kitty shook her head, swallowing a bite of ice cream. “That was when they were broken up.”
Megan stared back at her.
“You didn’t know about that?” Kitty asked cautiously.
Megan put her pencil down and crossed her arms as she leaned across the counter. She said, very tersely, “Dad and Daddy both swear they knew the other one was the one from almost the moment they met.”
Kitty snorted. “Oh, honey. Sorry to have to burst your bubble, but they’re leaving out some stuff there. They broke up quite quickly actually. Not sure about Scotty, but Kevin had at least two other serious boyfriends before they got back together.”
“Really?”
Kitty nodded. “One of them was Robert’s brother Jason.” She waved her hand dismissively. “Anyway, so Valentine’s Day. They were broken up, and your dad was secretly seeing this guy, Chad Barry.”
“Wait - ”
“Yes. Chad Barry, the Hollywood megastar. Not back then, though. He was on a soap and in the closet.”
Megan just continued to stare at Kitty in surprise.
“I’m not sure of all the details, but Chad’s beard decided she was going to fix up Chad’s gym buddy - and yes, air quotes, gym buddy - with a friend of hers. Lo and behold, it was Scotty. Let’s just say, the date lasted until the next morning. At which point, your dad called me from the bathroom, freaking out.”
“Huh.”
“I would have bet good money that the next time I saw Kevin, he would’ve told me that things were over with Chad and back on with Scotty.”
“They weren’t?”
“Oh no. Something happened. Chad was still in the picture, and I didn’t see or hear anything about Scotty again for several months. I tell you, though, from the tone of your dad’s voice...some serious regret, I think.”
“That’s so sad.”
Kitty nodded. “But! It all worked out in the end. Well, except for Robert and me. And Chad.”
“Why did he and Dad break up?”
Kitty shrugged. “Different stages. Chad was just coming out; your dad was starting to look for something more serious. That kind of stuff. That wasn’t the very end, though! Chad showed up later and...” Kitty cleared her throat. “I’m not going to tell you that story.”
“What?!” Megan asked, extremely curious.
Kitty shook her head, lifting a finger to zip and lock her lips.

“Hey kid!”
“Hi Uncle Justin! Hi Rachel!”
Megan’s seven-year-old cousin waved enthusiastically at her from behind Justin. Rachel was in awe of Megan and had a tendency to follow her around whenever they were together.
“What’s going on?” Justin asked as he let Megan into the house.
“First...I wanted to show you this.” Megan whipped out her new driver’s license and held it in front of Justin’s face.
“Nice!” he said, taking it from her. “And the picture doesn’t suck either.”
“I know! Second, I wanted to ask you some questions for my paper.”
Justin shook his head. “You finally have your license. You have the keys to your dad’s car. And the first thing you do is come over here to do homework.”
Megan’s eyes moved quickly from side to side, then she nodded.
“Lame,” Justin informed her. “But come on in. I only have a half-hour or so before I need to drop off Rach at Allison’s store. I’m on nights in the ER this week.”
“Cool,” Megan said, taking out her notebook as she sat on the couch. “I’m guessing you’ve heard about this project already.”
“Of course.”
“Of course. So...do you have any good memories of Dad and Daddy?”
“Yeah, sure. Have you ever heard about your dad’s bachelor party?”
Megan made a face. “Do I want to?”
Justin laughed. “Oh yeah. So because your dad is even lamer than you are, he doesn’t really have any friends. The bachelor party was him, me and Uncle Tommy.”
Megan snorted. “That is pretty lame.”
“It gets worse. Now, your other grandparents weren’t...they weren’t able to make it to the wedding.”
Megan flashed him a skeptical look but didn’t say anything.
“Kev decided he was going to try and get them there after all. But Tommy and I wouldn’t just let him call. So we all climbed into the car and spent the night driving to Arizona.”
Megan laughed. “Really?”
“Yeah, Uncle Tommy and I dozed in the car while your dad went inside to talk to your grandparents. I don’t know everything that was said. They didn’t come to the ceremony, but we did leave with some family heirloom cufflinks which, as I understand it, earned your dad major points. Which he lost again almost immediately, of course.”
“Of course.”
