"Just breathe."

"If I breathe any more, I’m going to hyperventilate and pass out."

Kevin glanced at Scotty with a smile as he led him up the driveway.

"Fine, then don’t breathe."

"Still ends up with me unconscious," Scotty said with a nervous laugh.

Kevin stopped just outside the front door, grabbing Scotty by the shoulders and turning the other man to face him. He tried not to laugh at the look of abject panic on Scotty’s face.

"Relax, OK? They’re going to love you."

"You don’t know that," Scotty argued.

"How could they not?"

Scotty opened his mouth to answer the question, and Kevin quickly leaned forward to kiss him before he could say anything. He pulled back almost immediately but kept his hand on the back of Scotty’s neck.

"Trust me...and don’t show any fear - it’s like chum in the water."

Scotty gave a surprised laugh. "That’s not very reassuring."

Kevin grinned at him and opened the door. "Hello?" he called out.

Kevin warily watched Scotty interact with his family. As he had predicted (and warned Scotty), they were basically interrogating him. Scotty was holding up pretty well, though. Kevin subtly reached a hand over to him, cupping his knee beneath the table. Scotty glanced at him with a smile.

"Scotty, I could swear we’ve met before," Sarah said suddenly, and Scotty turned his attention back to the conversation.

"We have. You invited me to a pool party."

Sarah waved her hand. "No, I know. Not that. Somewhere else."

"You are very familiar," Tommy agreed.

Scotty looked at Kevin questioningly, and Kevin sighed. He had been hoping this wouldn’t come up. He had a feeling it would result in some serious mocking.

"Scotty’s actually been here before. He worked catering for my graduation - "

"Oh, of course!" Sarah exclaimed.

Scotty looked at his plate, embarrassed. Kevin cleared his throat.

Sarah handed Nora an oven mitt, then looked towards the dining room before whispering, "He’s so nice. And funny."

Nora removed the tray of rolls and stood. "I know! I really like him."

"Bets on how long it takes Kevin to screw this up?"

Nora huffed and swatted at Sarah with the oven mitt. "A little faith, please. Maybe your brother has finally found - "

"The one? Oh, Mom. You’re such a romantic. But you know Kevin. The longest relationship he ever had was two months or something. I wouldn’t be planning the wedding just yet."

"Why are you being so cynical?"

"Ugh, I’m sorry. It’s just...Joe."

"Counseling isn’t going well?"

"He completely - "

Their conversation was interrupted as Kitty walked into the kitchen, carrying an empty wine bottle. She hurried the last few feet towards them.

"OK, quick. Someone tell me about the graduation party thing."

"Oh! That’s right. You weren’t there."

Nora moved the last of the rolls from the tray to the basket. Grabbing a towel, she wiped her hands. "I don’t really remember either."

Sarah leaned in closer. "You might have been too busy to notice, Ms. Hostess. Through the entire party - and I’m talking hours - Kevin kept staring at this extraordinarily young, extraordinarily good-looking cater-waiter. He never told us what, if anything, happened with him, but Kevin did not go out celebrating with the rest of us after the party."

"Really?" Kitty asked.

"Oh, yeah. I have never seen Kevin so blatantly interested in someone. Especially when Dad was around. It was like he was under some kind of spell."

"Well, can you blame him?" Nora chimed in. "Scotty is gorgeous."

Kitty nodded in agreement.

Before Sarah could say anything further, Justin entered the kitchen.

"What’s going on in here, as if I didn’t know?"

"Mom and Sarah are getting more rolls, and I’m getting more wine," Kitty said haughtily.

"Yeah, and it’s taken you, like, ten minutes. What’s the verdict?"

"Nice, funny and gorgeous; Kevin better not mess up," Nora summarized.

Justin swiped a roll and tore off a chunk, popping it into his mouth. "Agreed. I’d marry him."

"Justin," Sarah asked, amused, "is there something you want to tell us?"

Justin opened his mouth, sticking his tongue and the half-eaten bread at her.

Kevin let himself into the dark loft. Scotty had wanted Kevin to drop him off at home - alone - after dinner. He claimed his nerves were shot and that he would be horrible company. Kevin had argued that he had been amazing at dinner, that he didn’t care if Scotty just collapsed quietly on his couch, that he could give him a massage or relieve his nerves in some other ways, but he finally had agreed to take Scotty home. He smiled softly to himself at Scotty’s reaction to meeting his family. He knew they could be a handful, but Kevin was pleased with the idea that Scotty had been so worried about making a good impression.

He placed his keys on the shelf and was about to turn off his phone as well before deciding to contact Sarah. He looked at the clock - the kids were probably asleep, so he sent her a text message instead.

And the judges say?

Kevin took off his coat, walking to the kitchen to pour himself a Scotch. He sat down on the couch, kicked his feet onto the coffee table and sighed. His phone beeped.

Definitely a keeper. Watch out for Justin.

Kevin narrowed his eyes in confusion and sent a ??? back. Two seconds later, his phone rang.

"Hi Sarah."

"Hi," she replied quietly. "Justin said he’d marry Scotty."

Kevin snorted as he lifted his glass to his lips. He took a sip and then said, "Not if I get there first."

"So, this is pretty serious, huh? Meeting the family, joking about marriage...that was a joke, right?"

Kevin rubbed the back of his head and sighed. "I don’t know. I really like him, Sarah, but we haven’t been together all that long."

"So, um, have you..."

Kevin furrowed his brow. "Uh, yeah. We’ve had sex."

Sarah sighed in exasperation. "Not that, you dork. Have you said I love you?"

"Oh. No."

"Do you? Love him?"

Kevin didn’t answer.

"Kevin?"

"I’ve never said it to anyone, Sarah," Kevin said urgently. "I don’t know if I ever actually have been in love. Is this what it feels like?"

"What do you feel like?"

Kevin stared at the coffee table. "Kind of like I’m going to throw up all the time."

Sarah laughed. "Sounds like love to me."

Kevin put his drink down and took his feet off the table. He leaned forward, dropping his head toward his legs. "And if I say it, what happens in a couple weeks or a month when everything goes to shit?"

"Or," Sarah argued, "you’ll have a nice story to tell your grandkids. It will make up for the story you’ll have to tell them when they ask how you first met."

Kevin sat straight up. "Please, please, Sarah, don’t talk about that. Scotty was kinda embarrassed that you guys knew about it. He thinks it makes him look like, I don’t know, a whore or something."

"Aw. OK, I’ll warn the others. Can we still tease you about it, though?"

"Would it make a difference if I said no?"

"No."

For most of that night, Kevin couldn’t sleep. He tried to figure out what exactly he felt for Scotty, and whether it was too soon to tell him. He ultimately decided to just wait, to keep things as they were and see what happened. But it was incredibly hard to stick to that decision when, two weeks after the dinner, a grinning Scotty appeared at his apartment. As soon as Kevin opened the door, Scotty placed his hands on Kevin’s cheeks and pulled him into an enthusiastic kiss. Kevin grabbed the doorframe in an attempt to keep his balance.

What had to be almost a minute later, Scotty released him and Kevin stumbled back with a gasp. When he opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was Mrs. Berryman staring at them. He gave her an embarrassed smile and a quick wave.

"Hi, Mrs. Berryman."

Scotty turned around to look, then faced Kevin again with a sheepish laugh. "Sorry."

"Never apologize for kissing me."

Scotty grinned and moved in closer. Kissing Kevin again, he pushed him into the apartment and closed the door behind them. Kevin brought a hand up and placed it on the back of Scotty’s head, preventing him from pulling back. Scotty made a small noise and kissed Kevin deeper. They nearly tripped over each other as their legs tangled in an impromptu dance towards the couch. Kevin’s calves hit the couch, and he toppled down. Scotty nearly followed him, but he caught his balance with a hand on the back of the couch and a knee on the seat. He brought his other knee up and straddled Kevin, dropping onto Kevin’s lap and smiling as he looked at him.

"What’s with you?" Kevin asked, grinning.

"I got in."

Kevin stared at him in confusion before his comment registered. "Into cooking school?" he asked excitedly.

Scotty nodded, and Kevin surged forward, grabbing him and pulling him into another quick kiss.

"Oh my God! Congratulations! I knew you’d do it."

"I never would have even applied if it hadn’t been for you. Kevin, thank you."

Kevin smiled. "Just as long as I get to taste-test everything you make."

"Absolutely," Scotty agreed. "I’m going to need a lot of access to your taste buds."

Kevin laughed. "My tongue is yours."

"I like the sound of that," Scotty said, eyes closing as he leaned forward. Kevin met him halfway in a kiss. He lifted Scotty slightly off his lap, twisting as he pushed him down to the couch.

Kevin was still trying to figure out what exactly had just happened to him as he let himself into the loft almost a week later. He glanced up in surprise when he noticed someone else’s presence. As soon as he saw Scotty sitting on the couch, he relaxed. He had given him a key a few days earlier, but this was the first time Scotty had used it. Kevin paused a moment as he remembered the shy smile, the blush, the stammered thank you as Scotty had taken the key. Kevin had been incredibly close to telling him he loved him; the words were crawling up his throat, but he just couldn’t say them.

"Hi!" Scotty said cheerfully. He gestured to the pile of books in front of him. "Who knew cooking school would require so much reading?"

Kevin laughed as he tossed his gym bag to the side. "Are they all cookbooks?"

Scotty shook his head. "Mm, no."

Kevin sat next to him and picked up a book. Scotty lifted a hand to play with the hair at the nape of Kevin’s neck. "How was the gym?"

"Good. I - I think I got hit on," Kevin said cautiously. A statement like that usually would have led to jealous fights with guys he had dated before Scotty.

All Scotty said was, "You think?"

"Yeah, I don’t know. I mean, it was all very weird."

"Who was it?"

"Chad Barry."

Scotty’s mouth dropped open. "Chad Barry? The actor Chad Barry?"

"Yeah. We talked about shoes."

Scotty stared wordlessly at him for a moment before he abruptly stood. Kevin watched him nervously, waiting for him to start yelling or fighting. Instead, Scotty turned away from him and walked to the desk.

"What are you doing?" Kevin asked warily.

Scotty sat at the chair and began to type. "Googling Chad Barry gay rumors."

Kevin laughed in shock, then stood to walk next to Scotty. "It doesn’t bother you?" Kevin asked cautiously.

"Did you blow him in the locker room?" Scotty asked, distracted by the computer and barely listening for an answer.

"No!"

"Are you going to?"

"No."

Scotty shrugged. "Then what’s the big deal? I can't get jealous of every guy who's attracted to you, Kevin. There aren't enough hours in the - oh, look! Likes, Music: all things Christina. Definitely gay. Definitely."

Kevin watched him for a moment, smiling in amusement. "I love you," he said quietly.

Scotty twisted around immediately. "What?"

Kevin clapped a hand to his mouth. "Was that out loud?" he mumbled behind his palm.

Scotty, eyes wide, nodded.

Kevin groaned, closing his eyes and burying his face in his hands. "There goes the one good story to tell our grandkids."

Scotty opened his mouth, but the only thing that came out was an inarticulate sound of shock.
