Poetry.

Trying to inspire myself to write poetry again by posting reminders of what I've done before. I don't think I've ever posted any of my own poetry up out of paranoia over it being stolen, but I'm letting myself go and trusting you guys. Comments welcome, of course, but if you're not all that into poetry you probably won't "get" my poems. No offense ( Read more... )

Haha yeah, I definitely don't miss retail. I normally wouldn't have written a poem about work or Target, but I was challenged to by my professor. It didn't turn out as bad as I thought it would. :P

These are really good. I mean often you go and read people's writing because they are on your friends list and because you know that you love comments so it's not a big thing to make someone smile... but these are really good.

I loved "Poem of Complaint" and "This is what we call unrequited love", and I love them for 2 reasons. The minor one is that I identify with them but the more important reason is that both are topics that I tried to write poetry about too - and both aren't easy to work. Unrequited love should usually be forbidden for amateur poets, its so doomed to fail, but I really like your phrasing and the imagery and the preciseness of the choice of words.
Really well done :)

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your in-depth comments about what you liked. It's so hard to get most people to share more than a few basic complimentary words. I always want to say, "well, I'm glad you like it, but WHAT ABOUT IT do you like? What don't you like? What is good and what needs some work?" And those definitely are difficult topics to write about...I always find I have the roughest time getting started, and once I have some opening lines everything seems to flow from there!

No need to thank - I enjoy it. And you're so right - I mean its sweet to know someone reads it and wants to say something but when its just 'hey I loved them' it does leave you feel slightly unsatisfied ;).
But yeah they are - I was really impressed at how you stayed away from cliches, that is so hard to do. (lol I hardly ever manage myself lol)

Oh gosh yes, cliches are so hard to avoid! That was one of the things my professor worked with me on a lot. He was very quick to point out the cliches in my poems and urge me to find a fresh, new way to say something in the revisions. It definitely helped! Guidance is always nice to have - I'm kind of sad I'm not in that class anymore. I know I don't need the direction it provided, but it definitely got me motivated.

My favorite was "Unrequited Love" and I really like how the supermarket one turned out to be not what I expected. :)

Thanks! Yeah, one thing I like about poetry is how it enables you to turn an ordinary time, place or situation into something delightfully unexpected. :) "Unrequited Love" is my favorite too, I think.
