I just saw this on someone else's LJ and wanted to re-post it here.  I hadn't seen them in a while.

Kurt Vonnegut's Rules for Writing:
1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

I've seen several of these posted lately, and they're all excellent. I liked this one by Elmore Leonard (who I don't like as a writer, but I enjoyed his comments)...

You have it all wrong.

Even if I told you all, you would think it was nonsense yet pry for more.

This is why I get bored so easily and get into trouble. No way am I a snob.
