This is Obama's statement about his rescinding of the gag rule. I've bolded what, to me, is the important part. Never in my lifetime have I heard a president speak this rationally. I'm not especially optimistic that the American people can grow up, but it certainly bodes well to see a leader who is willing to make the attempt ( Read more... )

I'm so used to ignoring words from Washington -- I hope this trend continues and the power-that-be (let's just call them the others) don't start interfering.

Well, it's unlikely that many people will even read or hear that statement, and even less likely that it's going to mean much to anyone. That's okay, though. The key thing, for me, is the reasonableness of it. The acknowledging of complexity, the desire to search for common ground, the positioning of oneself as an adult. It's always easiest to pander to one's base than to take the risk of losing everyone. I'm not used to seeing politicians take risks like this; it gives me some hope.
