"An Unearthly Child" was my first exposure to DW. I was at college, and a local PBS station was running the old B&W serials. A friend persuaded me to join her watching the very first DW episode ever. I was only vaguely familiar with the show from when my younger brother watched the Tom Baker episodes in the late 70s/ early 80s.
It was the start of a long and happy love affair.
I like your analysis, and I think you've hit everything pretty much on the head. I definitely think the Doctor's companions humanized him.
I'm extremely jealous. I wish my first exposure to Doctor had been An Unearthly Child.
My first exposure was Planet of Fire which was a very odd place to begin. A volcano god, a fake American in a bikini, a shapeshifting silver robot, and a minaturised villain in a box! I still have an odd affection for that serial.
"Planet of Fire" is indeed an odd place to begin! I disliked Peri, so I'm not sure I'd have stayed with the show if that had been my introduction.
It was only later that I realized how unusual it is for a US viewer's first Doctor to be the First Doctor. For most viewers of my generation, it was either Tom Baker or Peter Davison. I will always have a soft spot for William Hartnell. : )
