Unrequited love

In Ghostlight, Ace asks the Doctor if there are things he hates. His answer fascinated me:

I can't stand burnt toast. I loathe bus stations. Terrible places, full of lost luggage and lost souls. ... And then there's unrequited love. And tyranny. And cruelty. We've all seen the Doctor react to cruelties, large and small, and fighting tyrannies ( Read more... )

To answer my own question, I can think of two possible times.

In "The Green Death," Three definitely seems to be moping over Jo. I'm not sure if this is wounded pride because she chooses saving her planet over a pleasure trip for a pretty blue rock, or if he's honestly hurt that she decides to marry somebody else. He was certainly rather pathetic at the end of the episode when he sneaks out of her engagement party.

In "Twin Dilema," Six was definitely hurt when Peri didn't automatically admire him after his regeneration. The look in his eyes when she called him "Yuck!" made me want to pat him on the head. Again, I have no idea if he felt the sting in his pride or in his heart, but it could fit an unrequited love theme. Of course, she changed her mind over time and they eventually wound up shagging like bunnies, but it took time to get there.

Well, Cameca was in love with him, and while I have no doubt he loved her back, he knew he couldn't stay and he couldn't take her with him, so he had to act like he didn't.

Considering that during the seventh Doctor's era they were trying to up the "mystery" of the Doctor, it's entirely possible he was referring to something from his past - before he left Gallifrey. *shrug*

I've always been more than a bit curious about that line, myself.

Six was definitely hurt because Peri didn't like him anymore, and then he tried to kill her, which really didn't do anything to win her over. But as you said, she got over it eventually and they ended up shagging like mad. *makes mental note to write the next chapter of Sensual Refinements*

The girl is hard to please. *grin*

See, with you mentioning about the campinons loving him, that even could be what he hates, because he doesn't love them that way and he feels about bad about that. As for unrequited for him... Barbara jking, I can't really think of anyone, except Charley to some degree, in Neverland she didn't want him to sacrifice for her, and her Peter Pan and Wendy references make sense with that. Also Grace because she wouldn't come with him in the end. This is of course after seven, I can't really think fo anyone in the show though, I haven't seen 6 or 2 though.

But if that was really something he felt as badly about as he does tyranny and cruelty, I would imagine that he would stop trying to cultivate friendships. He might even start travelling alone, if he truly felt that he as breaking hearts left and right. No, for some reason, I got the feeling he was talking about his unrequited love and I'm honestly baffled who he could have been talking about. As bibliophile1887 mentioned, he could have had his heart broken before he ever left Gallifrey, but by the time he's reached his seventh regeneration that's a long time to be carrying a torch for somebody!

Maybe he just plain doesn't *like* it. It's entirely possible he doesn't feel as badly about them and loathe them as much as tyrany and cruelty but he does hate it as much as burnt toast.

I always thought he meant that he hated the things that unrequited love made other people do. Like tyranny and cruelty. Not things that he was dealing with personally, but things which caused messes that he then had to sort out.

That's certainly possible. It seems an odd thing to focus on, however, as opposed to war or poverty or social inequality... all of which are more direct causes of tyranny and cruelty.

Great icon, btw. As long as you're making a shout-out to "Delta and the Bannermen," Ray was a case of unrequited love (not for the Doctor); maybe he was thinking of her.
