So, twenty years ago today, the Doctor Who TV Movie starring Paul McGann aired on US television, on the Fox network. Not many people watched and/or liked it, apparently ( Read more... )

Much as I loved (and side-eyed, to some extent) the movie when it premiered, when I look at it now, I still love it, but also recognize that it is quite legitimately crap in a lot of ways. I can't quite imagine how things would have gone had we gotten a US series out of it, but I suspect it wouldn't have been nearly as good as the revived UK series has turned out to be.

BTW, the Verity! podcast just did a live commentary on the film for the anniversary, if you want to hear it, and it's very easy to follow along even if you're not watching the movie at the same time: https://veritypodcast.wordpress.com/2016/04/20/extra-paul-mcgann-in-velvet/

So they wanted to make the Doctor and the Master brothers, too? I know the idea is old but I'm so glad it never happened. The lack of being blood related gives them freedom from each other and helps to avoid the cliche. I'm not even commenting about looking for the father.

What are spider-Daleks? :)

I was mad at the time that we didn't get more DW...but rather glad that america wasn't producing it (does that make sense?!) so happy it worked out in the end the way it did, even if I had to wait for it. So much good came out of that fizzled attempt - and though many did not love the movie (many, many Americans included), and while I had my own objection with certain things, I rather love it after all and it holds a special place in my heart!

*HUGS*

YUS. Want to see a spider-Dalek!! *Shudders*

IIRC, I put that night aside to watch the TVM, but got called in to work, and my attempt to tape it wasn't good, because my VCR at the time was on its last legs and died shortly afterward. So, there was already a massive amount of crankiness involved ( ... )

The TVM is its own beautiful mess, Goo!Snake Master and all, but as you say, it led to the EDAs and the Eight Audios, and Eight in general, and so it is redeemed.

That audition tape script is pretty awful though. McGann works it, but... oh dear.

(I haven't given up on Spider Daleks yet. I feel like they're going to pop up eventually as the writers struggle to find things to do with the Demented Pepperpots)
