The Husbands of River Song Reaction and Discussion Post [SPOILERS!]

Well, here we are again, with the culmination on what has, I think, been overall rather a good year for Doctor Who. That's right, it's the Christmas Special, The Husbands of River Song, a story featuring...well, River Song and her husbands, I suppose. Will it be any good? Right now I'm probably too full of turkey and, er, Xmas cheer to be able to ( Read more... )

All I wanted was a shippy screwball comedy, which I totally got -- and if my biggest complaint is that it dragged a bit in the middle and that we didn't actually get a full-on Twelve/River kiss, well, I can live with both of those things, especially since the final shot was so romantic.

I had issues with it... I admit to a few points where I stopped playback and walked away to deal with something else, because it was seriously annoying me. I'm not anti-River, but this one probably requires caring more than I do, though I'm not a basher.

However, I ended up getting into the swing of it, and will watch it again to give it a better chance. To my relief, it looks as if the Doctor has actually learned a lesson from what happened in S9, and will help River have that 24-year-long night, but won't try to destroy the universe to save her. (Considering I recently read a fanfic in which #12 did try to rescue her from the Library, and ended up destroying both his own mind and the TARDIS, which made me cry ridiculously both times I read it... no, if he knows better than to try, if he's learning that letting go is sometimes all one can do, then that's a good thing.)

So... how long until S10? Too long, sigh...

[ETA: I enjoyed it more a second time through, so that's good.]

"At Close of Day" by Starjargon. Found it in several places, but AO3 is where people (including me) have commented most:

I thought the ending was a little forced, and I prefer the idea of Eleven being the one to take her to the Singing Towers, but other than that, it was a ton of fun. No one can do capers like River, and I really enjoyed all the bits about River believing that the Doctor doesn't love her, until "Hello, Sweetie." AWWWWWW!

Seems like I'm in the minority, I didn't like it much. But it always could have been worse ;) My review: http://alumfelga.livejournal.com/9307.html

Well...I debated on watching due to "Heaven Sent" which, after actually a decent season, nearly put me off Doctor Who for the foreseeable future; and not being crazy about the whole mega-complex and at times annoying River Song storyline. But why not finish out the year, eh ( ... )
