Maybe it's the images you're choosing? Some just won't allowed themselves to be colored no matter how hard you try. xD
I have trouble with shading, too. Particularly clothing. Skin is easy-peasy for me, and I don't really "shade" hair, but clothes are just hard.
And also, everyone's more critical of their own work than they are of other people's. I'll bet yours isn't so bad.
