Perfume - I *love* this film!

Jan 06, 2007 16:32

I thought I would write a post about the film "Perfume - the Story of a Murderer". IMDB informs me that it finally has opened in the states.
It is certainly not anyone's cup of tea, but if you like dark, abstruse, dramatic, thrilling, yet poetic and sensual films with artfully composed images... then "Perfume" is your movie.

Since the incomparable ( Read more... )

Thanks, Pearl. :-)

Yes, it IS gruesome now and then - it's about the sense of smell, and there ain't only odoriferous things, if you get my meaning. Stanley Kubrick said eventually, the book is unfilmable - how do you visualise smell?! Tykwer *did* a great job with that; he shows some of the sources of smells, sometimes in a slightly stomach upsetting way. Just don't eat something during the first 10 minutes, then you should be on the safe side... ;-)
Otherwise, it's a fantastic study of the sick obsession of a genius and what the lack of love in a human's life can cause.

And I clean forgot that "Perfume"'s UK release was on 26th December 2006.

I hadn't planned to go to see this but now that you have recommended it and I realise that it is directed by Tom Tykwer and I shall try to see it. I enjoyed Lola Rennt and found Der Krieger und die Kaiserin intriguing.

Your pastel illustration is wonderful. I love your style.

Brummie, if you like Tykwer's style, you won't be disappointed with "Perfume". I thought that his art has reached a new highpoint there.
I love "Lola rennt"! That was such a refreshing, creative film. "Der Krieger und die Kaiserin" was interesting, but I didn't like the story. Tykwer's first long film "Die tödliche Maria" was great and totally absorbing. (Don't know if it is available in English though)

And thank you so much for your comment on the drawing! :-)

This all sounds to the good, Whiteling. It's not yet released here, but our small city gets things last; sometimes not at all ( ... )

I do hope you'll get both "Perfume" and "Children of Men" at your cinemas - some films (especially those that were made from one's favourite books) ought to be seen on the BIG screen.

I loved your reflections on the pastel drawing. It's so interesting to hear what others see in my pictures. :-)
It's 50 x 33 cm. I don't want to spoil it for you - in case you are going to see the film (or read the book), you will know which scene is depicted. The comparison to the vampire topic seems very appropriate.

Have you looked at the last two posts in Wendy's house of fashion horrors?
Oh dear, yes. *shudders* I must admit I am more interested in fashion history than in current trends... therefore I am a retro fan through and through. (Pity that they didn't wear tricorns in the 1930's. :-D)

I am assuming the scene is with the daughter of the person played by Alan Rickman, since she has the digitally enhanced red hair of great redness. Your picture implies that he manages to kill her afterall, since from reviews his desire to capture the "essence" of women means his killing them. Well, I shall see ( ... )

Nnmmm... my lips are sealed. :-x

Oh, Marlene Dietrich was one classy woman! Not only her facial features were very distinctive, but so was her dressing style. She looked gorgeous in hats like this:

I wanted to watch it in the cinema next town, but I had no chance yet... I guess we'll have to wait until the DVD is released. But I'm really looking forward to see it; the trailers were awesome, and I enjoyed the book like a bottle of exquisite wine.

Oh - and your sketch is really wondrous. You're a very talented woman, my dear.

It really is a film well worth watching, and it is wonderful on the BIG screen. Maybe you'll make it to the cinema in time. I was not only happy because I truly recognised one my favourite books in it, but also because it is finally a German film that can hold out a candle to other international productions.

Thank you very much for your compliment, Mona. I'm glad and happy to share my work with lovely people like you. *hugs*

Wow, I didn't see the movie but now I'm curious. I only know the book, I read it several times and I like it very much.
Your sketches are fantastic, sweetie!
Have a wonderful weekend! *hugs and cuddles*

Usually I am rather reluctant to recommend films since I am aware that tastes vary widely. The woman sitting next to me in the theatre for example groaned at one point "So ein Schwachsinn!" ("Bollocks!") during a scene I found absolutely touching. There you have it. Oh well.

And thanks!! I'm so happy to share my work!
Have a most wonderful weekend too!
*hugs you tight*
