Sam was there in a pair of slightly oversized BDUs, carrying a P-90 over her shoulder. Her 9 mm and combat knife were at her waist, and she had extra clips of ammunition for each weapon, two protein bars, and her lockpicks in the pockets of her black vest.

Sam took off very carefully. Or at least she meant to, but the controls were a little more sensitive than she was expecting and she shot up into the air quickly. "Whoa. Touchy."

She continued the rest of her ascent without incident, once she adapted to the controls. "Flies a little like a starfighter, too."

Luke pulled the X-Wing into the air as well and set himself into an easy orbit as they waited for the others. "It makes sense," he said. "Vader used to be Jedi."

He was quiet for a moment. "Okay," he said. "I don't know what we're going up against, so it's probably better that you know where the weapons and shielding systems are. Can you see them on the console? Shielding should be on the right next to the fuel gauge."

"Got it," she said, finding it on the instrument panel. "Do you have shielding, too, or am I the only lucky one? Also, do we have a map or star chart or something?"

"Oh, I've got shields," Luke said. "The Rebellion's hard up for volunteers as it is without sending us out to die in unshielded metal boxes."

He pushed buttons on his console, missing Artoo for a moment, before replying. "I'm kind of hoping John knows where he's going," he said. "The navicomputers will be able to deal with any coordinates he sends us. Um, the screen on the left."

"Good to know," she replied, "and yeah, I've got it. I see." Sam adjusted the computer and the controls so she could see everything and still fly. Vader was much taller than she was.

"Is John flying? And what is John flying?"

"Something called a Prowler, I think," Luke said. "Aeryn's ship. It'll be a pretty tight squeeze for them all."

"Tighter once we get Aeryn," Sam mused, not accepting that they wouldn't rescue her.

"Maybe we can borrow something on the ground where we're going," Luke said.

It was how the Rebellion had gotten most of their ships.

"Sounds like a good plan to me," Sam had been on the borrowing end a couple of times, as well. "If I get killed for taking this ship, you'll make sure they say nice things at the funeral?"

[tatooine_doofus]

"I will," Luke promised, "but Vader's not going to do anything."

He hoped, anyway.

For all of his lectures to Rory about being careful, this was probably way stupider a thing to have done.

"Yeah, okay," Sam snorted. "You might want to check your life support, Luke. Sounds like you've got something off in your air mix that's making you delusional."

[tatooine_doofus]

"I'll do a detention if it means helping Aeryn," Luke said.

Mentioning that Vader kind of wanted to kill him seemed completely beyond the point.

"At least we'll be in there together." Sam gave a quiet mental goodbye to another Saturday.

"Only if he finds out," Luke said, more out of an amazing sense of optimism that any kind of facts to base it on.

"I forgot to do a squirrel check," Sam didn't headcontrolpanel, but only because it was the control panel and they needed the ship badly. "Assume it'll be on the radio."
