I killed a butterfly this morning. While they do only live about a day anyway, and it was completely an accident, i genuinely feel terrible about it. Laura, the guy behind us on the sidewalk, and I'm sure everyone who is reading this is mocking me, but i seriously feel bad. All this butterfly-death fixation only serves as a reminder that you suffer from the same affliction of most of postmodernity. Namely, you are unable or unprepared to deal with the transient nature of mortal existence. Just as the empire must constantly assert itself as the only reality in the minds of its populace, we must never acknowledge that we are but dust. When we see ourselves for what we are it is impossible to set up our own tyrannies of self-determination where we rule indefinitely. We are forced to understand that whatever decisions we make don't really matter, and we are then forced to see others as lost and fragile creatures just like us. And then, when you recognize that spark of the divine in another person it makes it awfully hard for you to drop a bomb on their shanty, and that makes you a lousy citizen and a radical. A radical because you can place the value of another's life before your own, and when you start to do that the entire framework of society is thrown off kilter, because nations are built on someone ( ... )

I bought a calendar for 2006. In the middle of September. But it was Vera Bradley so I had an excuse?

God uses the faithful to bring others to him... I guess you're the faithful, and the butterfly is the others? Yes, I think so.
