Tech Question

I've got a friend's Gateway laptop here. It's 3 years old. It likes to randomly.. stop recognizing the CD-rom. I solved this problem the first time for them by pulling out the HD, plugging it into my comp, reformatting and reinstalling Windows. But it's done it again now ( Read more... )

Probably a bad optical drive. Chat up with Gateway and ask the tech to look up the part number you need in Siebel (I worked for gateway for 3 years). They should be able to find the part number you need, or if you feel comfortable enough, just crack it open, pull the optical drive off and get the P/N that way. Then head over to ebay or froogle and buy it. I would suggest buying from someone/somewhere that has a return policy because if you get the new drive and you still have the problem, you definantly know its the mobo.

will it resee the drive if the puter is restarted, my thinkpad does that
but when you restart, it sees the drives
