IC: The Dark Hunt

May 30, 2006 22:20

The light is beginning to fade as evening draws closer, and the paths in the forest are growing shadowed.

Despite this, the gleam of a white cloak can easily be seen moving through the trees and away from the bar.

The shade of the leaves, so useful for cutting the fierce glare of the sun in daytime, deepens to concealing shadow as night approaches.

"Oh, that's brilliant!" the Doctor exclaims. He turns in a circle, admiring the energy web slowly pulsing as it closed in around them. "That is really quite a piece of work. Doesn't mean I won't destroy it, of course, but it is really something."

He points the sonic screwdriver toward the edge, fiddling with various settings, looking for something that would disrupt the power source long enough for them to break free.

Peter gives him an odd look.

"You're as bad as Ray and Egon. Yeah, great. Evil net thing that's trying to kill us. Yeah, that's really wonderful. I think we should shoot our way out of this fishnet before we're a couple of sorry fishies."

He readied the thrower for blasting, but unsure how it would affect the structure. And the effect of it was way too close to the Other's whammy on him for his comfort.
Like hell he was going through that mess again.

"It won't be trying to kill you", their companion observes. "That isn't how she's worked so far."

Indeed, it does not seem particularly deadly, at least not at present. The shape of the net continues to collapse inexorably inward-- magic mixed with metal for specific purpose.

The spaces between the finely gleaming wires begin to darken with thickening shadows, blocking more and more of the light from those within. A subtle tension begins to build within the trap as the magic strengthens, trying to elicit feelings of fear and tension, of choking and claustrophobia.

However, the iron strung so carefully through the structure of the web is beginning to vibrate in response to the sonic resonance of the Doctor's screwdriver-- slowly at first, then faster, and faster still.

"No," the Doctor says, drawing out the syllable. "She doesn't want us dead. She'd rather drain us of all our energy first. Make herself stronger by preying on those she considers weak, i.e. everyone."

He refines the frequency further as he talks, able to shrug off the fear for the moment. The battery in the screwdriver is being drained faster than it should be as well because of the energy field, but he hopes it will be enough to shatter the web.

Peter, on the other hand, was terrified, but right now, anger was rising to the forefront. Though that was causing more PKE to emanate from him.

"Well, screw that! Let's prove that bitch wrong, and get the hell out of here."

Jay watches, walking right to the edge of the trap while careful not to touch it, and studying it in every way he can.

The iron is interfering, though.

As the net draws more tightly around them, compressing the volume of available space, it quickly gathers more power -- but the stress upon it is now visible to the eye. The entire structure is vibrating now, and a low-level hum rises through the air as the sonics from the screwdriver approaches the frequency resonating through the iron.

It's louder inside the sphere than outside, and the sound itself is becoming a wildly beating force of its own against the eardrums and the bodies of the two trapped--

--and then the strain of the oscillation is too much for the structure. A high-pitched keening wail shrieks through the air in tones of bending metal, and the iron strung tautly through the net explodes outward. The energy released swirls wildly upward in a funnel-cloud shape, drawn into darkness and away.

The Doctor puts a finger in his ear and wiggles.

"Ow. Well, then. Everyone all right? No harm done? Good. And on we go."

Taking the lead, the Doctor continues on down the path, hoping they didn't fall too far behind Blodwen during their distraction.

Peter shook his head and staggered a little from the sudden release of tension and energy.

"Whoa, whee, let's never go on that one again." He blinked a few times, and then followed.

He did have some warning, when the metal started to keen under the strain. Time enough to jump back and to drop.

He's still bleeding from several small wounds when he stands to follow the other two, though.

It's lighter around the three of them now, and somewhat less oppressive.

This might be taken as a good sign, by some; however, anyone particularly sensitive to the presence of magic or the power of the Dark may realize that it is due to the absence of the energy that was just drained -- energy that has gone somewhere else, for another purpose.

What purpose that may be remains to be seen.

As they continue along the path, they come to a fork. One way leads deeper into the forest, possibly deep enough to brush the edges of the Dreaming if one goes far enough. It is covered with darkness and shadows, and looks anything but inviting.

The other route curves around to the left before taking a sideways skip and vanishing entirely behind a stand of trees. It looks like a normal forest path.

Utterly, absolutely, perfectly normal, down to the soft breeze -- cool crisp air, as from a distant mountain top-- fluttering the leaves and causing the light to flicker wildly.

The Doctor stops at the fork and considers both directions.

"Any votes, gentlemen?"

Peter thought for a moment.

"Let's see. If I was an evil ice witch, which way would I go? Down the dark path, which hey, I'm a part of. Or down the nice light, happy path?" Hang on, maybe he could use his own radar for this.

So he closed his eyes, and tried to increase his awareness of the area. Getting an idea of which direction Blodwen likely was.

"Dangerous to go too far into the forest", Jay observes. "It's a soft place. But that other path smells of a trap."
