Angstfluff is perfect, thank you. This is the part of the episode that felt most like Supernatural to me, untangled from the plotline that's yapping at the boys' heels to herd them where it needs them to go (no matter what marshes of stupidity lie between.) Naturally I fix on the trace of Sam here, or rather Dean's gaze at Sam:

Sam was just getting used to having amazing food dropped in front of him twice a day and Dean had been starting to collect these awesome recipes, ... and now Sam is sort of looking at Dean in a worried and woebegone way when he finds dinner is peanut butter cups and beerSo much love there. Likewise, Castiel's recovery from Buffy-heaven beatitudes (if that's the word I want) to reality-based impatience and pissiness: a portrait that reflects the artist. Dean wants so much to take care of his people, and their lives so often won't give him even that much ( ... )

Well, no, it's just that Sam's in bed and that would have stretched it out to more than one scene. :) And then there would have been exclamations and explanations and recriminations, and too much talking, and it would have changed the moment into something else. I'm sure Sam will be pleased about it eventually, once Gabriel stops trying to leap out at him with scissors or conjuring up kittens to chase his hair. And, you know, once he's sure Gabriel isn't going to screw Castiel over, because Sam is protective of Castiel.

And yes, I adored that first Sam/Dean/Castiel scene in 8x22, and kept making sadfaces at the screen for the rest of the episode for never giving us more. :(

Heee, you did too. :) I had to make it not ACTUALLY the hobbit, but Wind in the Willows works too! And means we get to double up on the literary home allusions from that period by making it a hobbit hole and mole end. :)

This is just about the sweetest thing I have read in quite some time. Gabriel reading to Cas, Dean's reaction to their closeness, to the content of the story...my heart.

Thanks for reading! It's been a while since I did an AND THEN GABRIEL RANDOMLY TURNED UP BECAUSE HE IS NOT DEAD OKAY fic, so I felt we were about due for one. :)
