I actually kind of like it when they do that. Makes it much easier to not accidentally stumble onto a fic where John's going to act like an abusive prick in a way that makes me see stars. You are totally right about it prompting an F4 response ... but sure saves on the wear and tear on my fandom love to know upfront that someone's going to treat John the way so many treat him. At one time, I think I may have even suggested that fandom adopt a "John warning" system for my peace of mind ... "Warning: John is going to act like he hates his kids instead of loves them" or "Warning: John is going to be so drunk 24/7 that he couldn't possibly hunt a monster without getting himself killed in the process" or "Warning: I so over-identify with Sam and/or Dean that John's going to get beat like a dog for everything my parents have ever done that pissed me off." :D
