Maybe she was genuine but something else occurred in the meantime? She didn't make any money from you herself, just the hotel, so you weren't obviously taken advantage of. You might bump into her again but meanwhile seems a very good thing to have done.

She got (quite a bit) of money from other passers-by. If she was scamming, although she didn't make any money from me, she couldn't very well say "oh, actually I don't need a room..."- so I have the feeling that she was just sticking to her story.

Quite frankly, if she had been outside in that weather all day, had some money for food by then & a hotel room to go to, I'd have assumed that she'd go straight away to get inside & recover (this was around 8 o'clock in the evening- by 11:15 she still wasn't there). And I had given her very straightforward instructions how to get there...

Oh well. As a friend of mine pointed out, better to feel one has been fooled than hearing on the news the next morning that someone fitting that description had been found frozen to death...
