I'm reading Mrs. Piggle Wiggle to my class. I've never read it before and they seem to be enjoying it so far. I had an extra copy of it in our classroom library so one of the boys checked it out so he could follow along while I read it aloud. So far, so good

And then I proceeded to read the chapter but every time "Dick" was mentioned, I read his name really quickly. And oh man, that name was mentioned nearly ever other word.

this made me splurt my grape juice. surely those prudish folk in the mid-1900s knew what 'dick' meant in the vulgar sense, right? I've never understood why anyone would curse their son by giving him that nickname. my uncle & (now deceased) grandpa are both named Richard. my uncle has never EVER gone by the hated name. my grandpa, on the other hand...*snerk* I had to laugh during some of our luncheon outings to Bob Evans.
