Sushi

Mar 24, 2010 21:57

Recently I realised that I've never eaten sushi, as far as I can remember. Perhaps I shouuld rectify this? Salmon marinated in vodka was a recipe I experimented with, a long long time ago, but that's really the extent of my knowledge of raw fish. Though ISTR learning that what I thought of as sushi is actually sashimi.

I'm currently browsing the Yo! Sushi website and looking at the menus and I think losing this sushi virginity might be a thing to prioritize :-)

I think I'm one of the few people on my friends list that doesn't love sushi. First of all, I'm vegetarian, which (contrary to what a lot of people seem to mean/believe) means I don't eat fish. There's plenty of vegetarian sushi out there, and I've tried it, but just something about the seaweed flavor that I can only take in small doses. I could probably eat sushi rolls that didn't have seaweed in them more than the ones that do, but I haven't really tested that theory. To me, it still tastes like seafood (even if vegetarian), which I've never liked. Oh well.

You'd be surprised how often patients would tell me, "I'm vegetarian" then follow that up with, "I only eat chicken & pork." or some other such nonsense.

Paul dislikes the nori (seaweed) as well and tends to avoid rolls for that reason.

Count me in that minority - mostly because of my unfamiliarity w/it, general dislike of fish (though I'm growing out that, slowly), and my issues w/ginger (which I'd love to be growing out of but body doesn't agree!).

I keep thinking I should do a ginger challenge at home some convenient time, and if that goes well, tackle sushi. But finding sometime "convenient" appears to be elusive - I just had to bin a tiny bit of fresh ginger which I bought a while back in prep for the food challenge that hasn't happened yet. I should have peeled and frozen it...

Anyway, all of that is to say that I'm not (yet) keen on sushi. I can totally understand how something would taste fishy or seafood-y even if there's no fish in it.

I'm in the minority on this one too. I've never even seen sushi until a few years ago when Arvid's daughter Lea stayed with us and had to have it. I tried a stamp sized piece of some kind of sushi...what was supposedly the best of the ones we had here...and no...sorry...raw fish just doesn't not appeal to me one little bit. Seaweed wouldn't either.

You can dip a toe in the water in the privacy of your own home - where it won't matter if you spit it straight out into your hankie - by grabbing a small selection pack from M&S

This is true, and likely a good plan - *but* if this experience makes you think "well, not ugh, but what is all the fuss about?" it's still worth going to a really good sushi place some day. There is all the difference in the world between OK sushi and good sushi.
