as for the impending march of the roaches? the best thing you can do right know is get some caulk and start plugging up every crevice, nook and cranny you can see. weather strip the doors and windows too.
because once they're in? oy! moving really will seem the best option!

Re: closing up all the crevices - I'm totally on it! Ever since you wrote that, I keep noticing the multitude of places that those disgusting creatures can crawl in from! and I'll deal with it post-haste.

If you don't have any pets or children, sprinkle a bit of boric acid around the edges, especially inside cabinets. The crystals are like tiny knives to insects. However, boric acid is a poison, so it's not healthy for kids or pets.
If you see a bug, squirt it with alcohol (rubbing alcohol, not whiskey). The alcohol will both kill and sterilize it.
When I had an apartment in a city, I had roaches until the mice moved in. They ate the roaches. However, that probably isn't the solution you're looking for.
