Oh, I like this ending! It works really well. And I still love the rest of the story, of course. :-)

You know how powerful I think this is. :)

But now, I want the sequel! You've got it partially written ... *eg*

Wow. That brought tears to my eyes. What a great backstory for Edgerton. I can so see him being that other boy, Ian, until he suffered loss and became Edgerton.

(I hope your grandmother's doing well.)

Oh, that's so sad! Great flashback and insight!
Thanks for writing it.

Over the fence line, he’d fire his bullets, bullets coming back. The screaming and shouting and shooting every day, day in and day out. And he wrote to her about the landscape, about how pretty it was. Jim the Hick died. Little Willy died. Texas from Arizona and Arizona from Texas , they all died. He just stopped writing about them. He couldn’t tell her. Couldn’t scare her. A bullet would scrape him, and he wouldn’t mention a word of it to her. In the treacherous rivers and swamps, a water snake would bite him, and she would never find out. Life was perfect in China or Baghdad , Guantanamo Bay or Afghanistan . The locals were wonderful, the food was great, they all joked and played volleyball in the sun. Everything was beautiful. That’s what he told her. He didn’t tell her about how they all were dying. That broke me. I love how the angst here is two-fold, his grief for his friends, and his grief for his love. You're such a skilled storyteller, I don't how you do it. When you write, you create a world for these characters that's so ( ... )
